Stalling 1st week, is it normal?

Okay this is my first week on Phase 2 and I have added 1 grain and 1 fruit per day back into my diet. I have always had a carb competitor with it...for example, peanut butter with my apple and turkey bacon with my cereal. For my bread(1 slice), I had egg or meat and cheese. Is it normal to have a stall or even a 1 pt. gain back(lost 10 lbs in the first two weeks)? Any advice would be great. I'm not giving up b/c I am back in my size 12 for the first time in over 2 years!!

TIA,

Katie

I am having the exact same problem. I have only been on Phase 2 for a couple of days and I have gained back 3 pounds of the 6.5 I had lost on Phase 1 for the second time. I feel like crying. I have only added 1 starch and 1 fruit per day. For breakfast this morning I had a Lite 85 yogurt and a piece of string cheese. I've already eaten my morning snack b/c I feel very hungry. My morning snack was a mini bagel (Pepperidge Farm 100% whole wheat) with 2 T. peanut butter. It's only 9:30 and I feel like I am hungry right now. I also have no idea what to have for lunch b/c I feel very tired of everything. Can we have light hot dogs made with turkey and pork? I don't know what I'll do if I continue to see the scale move up. It's just so depressing when I worked so hard on Phase 1.

Been there! It is not a fun feeling - you are so motivated after phase 1, excited but nervous about phase 2, then BOOM - the scale creeps back up. Happened to me! Its VERY common when moving to phase 2. I was about ready to chuck it all and head to McD's (Cathy talked me out of it that day and I think I will always remember that as a "turning" point for me, where I decided that it wasn't just a diet, I was going to continue forever no matter what the scale said from one week to the next)
Anyhow - I lost 8lbs in phase 1 (started with about 46lbs to lose). I happily added my 1 fruit and one grain...then gained one pound, then another. BUT - I stuck it out, and in my third week of phase 2 I lost both those pounds, then steadily lost A LOT more. I've now lost 33lbs total in 19 weeks - 25lbs of that on phase 2! But if I had let that little gain at the beginning scare me off, I'd still be sitting here a size 16 instead of a size 10!
So - HANG IN THERE! Your body will "level out" soon and start going down again.

Wow, that was some great motivation there! I am so thrilled for you! You have really done a marvelous job! I have about 40 pounds to lose so I really need to do this, but I'm getting discouraged, b/c I'm feeling very hungry and bored and tired of cooking. I'm starting to feel a little deprived and limited. I started on South Beach in March, and lost about 6 pounds but gained it all back in Phase 2. I just finished Phase 1 for a second time and lost 6.5 pounds, but have gained back 3 pounds in the past couple of days. Can you tell me what a typical meal plan is for you? What do you usually eat in a day? I look at your success and I want that too!!! Thank you for your wonderful, inspirational advice.

Thank you so much for the words of encouragement. I am glad to hear that other people are having the same problem!! I am staying strong and keeping it up. I might not add the 2nd grain or fruit for another week or two. Thanks again!!!

Hi Kate! I don't know if I have really done anything "special" and I certainly haven't been "perfect" all the time -
I went through a phase after about a month or 6 weeks where I was getting bored, and VERY tired of cooking. For me the 6 week point was actually HARDER than the beginning. At the beginning I was really excited and motivated, phase 1 flew by, etc. But then when I tried to "settle in" I had kind of a hump to get over, ya know? Where the weight loss was slowing down, I was getting a little bored with some foods, etc. But that was when I had to take a look at it and say "okay - either you quit now and never lose another lb or you find a way to keep going" Looking at it that way, it was an easy choice for me.
As far as getting bored and feeling limited, I did for awhile - but that was really only ME making me feel that way. There are plenty of choices, TONS of great recipes out there - I just wasn't feeling motivated to try stuff. Once I got past that, I've felt great about the food again and feel like I have almost unlimited choices! Honestly I don't think we've had the extact SAME meal more than once or twice in 5 months! We try at least 5 new recipes every week, then maybe 1 or 2 old standbys. I don't like to eat the same things over and over. So I don't really have a "typical" menu (other than the portions of things like my 4.5 cups veggies, 3oz protein at each meal, 2-3 cups dairy, 2-3 grains, 2-3 fruits, lots of water, etc.)

I don't know if that helped any, but I know where you are coming from! I still have good days and bad days (where I don't feel like cooking, wish I could just chuck it all and head for drive-thru) BUT, the good days FAR FAR outnumber the bad days now! And I have decided to let myself have occasional treats and not feel guilty (we have a "treat" meal about every 2-3 weeks where we go out an don't stick 100% to SB - it actually helps me stick with it 99% of the time if I get that 1% break)

Hang in there! Trust me, if I can do this, you can! My first post here back in January was whining about how I know I needed to lose weight, how I thought SB sounded like a healhty way to go, etc. but how *I* could NEVER do this! I had never dieted successfully before and I really thought that "someone like me" could never lose weight.

Good luck!

I weigh myself every day, too. I know that's not recommended, but I do it for the same reasons you do--for encouragement or reflection.

Thanks so much for your encouraging words. I keep thinking I have so far to go and I don't know how long this is going to take! I know this is a life style change, not just a diet, but I'm freaking out about the pounds that are creeping back this first week of Phase 2. Glad to hear I'm not alone in this first week stall. Thanks!!
