Run 20+miles/week-start with Phase 2?

Hi everyone!

I am excited to start this eating plan, but am curious about where to begin.  I am currently training for a half marathon, and, as noted in the discussion thread, run 20 or so miles per week.  So I need those carbs or I will keel over!  Any suggestions? Thanks so much in advance...

Hi Anne,

Yes, it's probably a good idea for you to start in phase 2.

Hi Anne,

I'm a runner too and have completed Phase I running similar mileage to you. I found this phase really important to stop my cravings. I haven't run into problems at all unless I am running beyond about 7 miles or so. I definitely would add carbs, the night before and after running, any kind of "long" run---for me more than 10 miles or so. I'd come home from longer runs looking foward to WW pancakes with blueberries and strawberries. Yum.

Good luck with your training for the half! And good luck on the beach.

I would recommend maybe a 3 or 4 day induction phase, planned around your weekly long run (if that's how you train; that's how I train, and I ran a half marathon earlier this month). I was a complete idiot last year, started SB a week before a half marathon, thinking if I had some carbs the day before and day of the race, that would be good enough. Needless to say, I crashed and burned during the race. I'm on Phase 2 now, and don't feel I need to have more than 2-3 servings of carbs a day (the recommended amount). However, on teh days I do long runs (over 9-10 miles), I try to have a protein/carb (typically a pb&j sandwich) right after running to help with recovery.

When and where is your race? My half marathon was in VT and it was a million degrees (okay, in the mid 80s) and I was 3 minutes from my goal of 2 hours. I think I would have made it if it hadn't been so blasted hot and sunny! Good luck!

Hey!
Another Vermont runner! I did the Charlotte Covered Bridges Half in May (and missed my time goal by 3 minutes too....). Which half did you run?

I'm actually from MA. DH and I drove to VT for the weekend. We ran the Covered Bridge Half Marathon in Quechee, the first weekend in June. For the first time ever I beat DH in a race! Arrogant guy that he is, he was waiting for me after he finished, not realizing I was ahead of him! lol.
