Chinese Food Today! What to order??

I've been invited out for Chinese Food for lunch today -- what on earth can I eat at a Chinese restaurant? Or should I suggest we go somewhere else?

I've just rededicated myself, and started a food diary to hold myself accountable for additional "sweet treats" that I might indulge in. I've had in insaciable sweet tooth lately -- I think my cravings have returned, and I may start Phase 1 again for a week or so after the holiday weekend if there is no improvement. I gained 2 lbs as soon as I started Phase 2 (before I gave into my cravings), which has been discouraging, probably driving me to give into those cravings.

Plus, I picked up a bridesmaid dress for my brother-in-law's wedding, and it fits like a glove -- a slightly tight glove. I'd like to reach my goal before the September 10 wedding, but at this rate I'll be above my starting point by then! But if I could reach 115 by September, that dress would fit wonderfully! So I think I need help!

There are several options. Some Chinese restaurants offer "diet" menus where the dishes are steamed and sauce is served on the side. That would be a great option if they have it . . . you can usually get chicken or some other meat and veggies. If there is no such option I would just ask them to tweak the dish for you: hold the MSG, steam if possible, sauce on the side, maybe ask for less oil or something like that. You can also ask what is in the sauce. I also have told many a Chinese place that I'm diabetic and can't have sugar, so they don't make my sauces with sugar! It works! Just remember to skip the rice and definitely anything fried. You should be fine.

Also, Chinese food inevitably has lots of sodium so you may feel bloated or your weight may be up tomorrow. Just keep that in mind . . . it's just water retention. Remember to drink lots of water.

Chinese is the hardest to eat out at, and stay within the SBD.

I decided not to risk teh Chinese food...I suggested Applebees and I got a salad, which was SBD friendly (except I forgot to ask for it without those little tortilla strips.) So I'm in the clear! I didn't want to risk getting and not enjoying chicken and veggies, as this lunch was a reward for me for a 'job well done'. I enjoyed my salad, so that's good!

Thanks everyone!

Good choice and willpower on changing where to have your lunch if you weren't sure! :)

We have chinese about every other Friday..I always get steamed chicken with vegetables, with the sauce on the side. They always include steamed white rice which I do not eat. I feel like it's a very healthy choice, as 'our' restaraunt doesnt' use MSG at all.

I really look forward to having this for dinner..:) IT feels like a big cheat, but it's just a mass of veggies with some yummy chicken!

My 5 YO DD loves chinese and the other day she begged DH and I to take her to chinese dinner. I was a bit worried about what to have (I am on P3, and am trying to maintain).

Well I order whats called 'three ingredient taste'. It has chicken, beef, and shrimp with lots of veggies (broccoli, water chestnuts, onion and snowpeas) I asked the waitress ahead of time what kind of oil they cook it in and she said vegetable oil, so I asked if the chef could just cook it with very little to no oil and she had him do that. They do not use any MSG so thats good. I asked for her not to bring any rice (no temptations that way) and I gave the appetizers (egg roll, shrimp toast to my DD & DH) I also avoided the little crunchy noodles which was hard, (I love those little noodles dipped in Sweet & Sour sauce). I had 1/2 a cup of the egg drop soup. It was really good and I felt like I did not cheat at all!

That sounds like a great dish. I opted out of Chinese on Thurday, but what did my husband want for dinner last night? Chinese. I struggle with eating things that he will enjoy, as he isn't on SBD. He gets upset when I won't go to restaurants because of my diet (he doesn't think I need to diet). So I caved in. I had General Tso -- not good, but I ate VERY little of it. That little container it comes in -- I probably ate 4 nuggets. I may post on the husband issue, as that's what usually causes me to stray.

I'll look for that type of meal next time I'm forced to go to Chinese!

Thanks
