What is Sorbitol? Is it SBD-friendly?

I got a sugar-free breakfast syrup (Smuckers Brand). It said sugar free, so I sort of assumed it was OK. Wel, it's got 8g of carbs, 0g sugar, and 7g of Sorbitol. I'm guessing it's not SBD-friendly. But I've never heard of it before. Anyone know??

Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol. Many sugar-free products contain sorbitol - usually with splenda or some other sweetener. It is ok to have foods that contain sorbitol in moderation - they have been known to cause intestinal disturbances. Some members of the board stay away from it entirely due to negative affects.

Thanks! I had never heard of it, thanks for the good info. I figure that no more of the sugar-free breakfast syrup than I use, it probably won't cause any problems. The 8g is in 1/4C of syrup, and I tend to use 2-3TBSP. So I'll stick with it! It is YUMMY, so I'm glad to hear that it's okay.

Thanks Karen!

Yeah, I think it's ok if sorbitol is found as an ingredient in certain things like syrup and jelly. More harmful, probably in a candy bar. Though I am sure there are some SBDers who love them as an occaisional treat and do not get any stomach upset!
