New here! So excited...

Hi all! I have been on South Beach for two weeks, today was actually my first day of Phase 2. I read your messages all the time, and they have really helped me clear things up and stay motivated. I do have a few questions though: Firstly, on Phase 1, I had great weight loss the first week (about 4.5 lbs.) The second week, I didnt lose anything...I think that it might be because I was PMSing. (but Im on the pill...should this prevent bloating the week before? Or is it different for everyone?) In any case, I resisted the temptation to stay on Phase 1, and continued to Phase 2 today. If someone could check my menu, it would be most appreciated. I copied what I ate today below.

I know most people have the opposite problem, but I was so disappointed after working so hard and seeing no weight loss last week that I am too nervous to step on the scale! I havent cheated, and I go to the gym for about 1 hour and 45 min. before work 6 days a week (cardio and a weight lifting plan created for me by a personal trainer). I have been working out and eating relatively healthy for a long time, but I just have a small layer of fat over my muscle that I want to get rid of.

Also, I know that you are supposed to eat a carb with a protien. I decided that my first carb would be a bowl of high fiber cold cereal and skim milk in the morning. I wasnt sure, but today I ate a hard boiled egg in addition. Is this right, or does the milk count as the protien as well as the dairy? Also, if I read correctly in the book, he wants you to keep your first carb consistent for the first week. So does that mean that I should keep eating cereal in the morning for the first week, or can I have cereal one day, and an apple and peanut butter the next day? Also, he says that it is preferable to start with a fruit, but from everything I have read here it is OK to start with anything you are missing the most...right?

Breakfast:
1/2 cup of All Bran with extra fiber and 1/2 cup of skim milk
1 hard boiled egg
1 cup coffee with a small amount of skim milk

Snack:
1/2 cup plain fat free organic yogurt with splenda

Lunch:
(teaspoon metamucil in water)
salad with can of tuna in water

Snack:
15 almonds

Dinner:
steamed edamame
salmon (poached)
salad

Snack:
1/2 cup ricotta with almond extract and splenda

(and of course water was drank all day)

Thank you so much for all your help, and sorry for being so long winded! I should have joined a while ago and asked these questions...

Hi Sophie and welcome!!!

It sounds like you're doing great! If you lost 4.5 lbs. in P1 then you did great! Since you have already been eating healthy and you work out so much, you *might* experience a slower (but most likely more permenant) weight loss. I'm the poster child for that! :-) What are your stats?

Your menu looks great to me, but I'm sure someone more seasoned can help you more there. Just make sure you're getting the recommended 4.5 cups of veggies in your day. You definitely can add that egg in the a.m. Milk counts as dairy only, not protein. The only things that count as dairy are milk (or soy milk) and yogurt.

Everyone is different about how they add back the healthy carbs after P1. That's up to you and I do think you should add back what you miss the most. You can add a grain or a fruit, but do so slowly and increase to 2-3 of each a day. I think it's up to you whether you do a grain one day and then a fruit the next day, but I'm not totally sure on that.

I'm looking forward to getting to "know" you better! Welcome!!!

Oh! I thought that it was 2 SERVINGS of dairy! Thanks, that is really helpful. So does that mean that I can have a cup of yogurt instead of half a cup for a snack, and maybe a half glass of milk with lunch?

Thanks for all the prompt advice!
