Conference suggestions needed...(m)
Find a Conversation

Hi, I am planning on attending a conference from 8/7 - 12. I'm excited about the conference, but I'm trying to plan ahead so I don't completely fall off the wagon and blow my diet. I've done really well on SB. I lost 5.5 lbs. the month of July. For me that's great because I only have a small amount to lose. I work out almost every day on my treadmill, Billy Blank Tae Bo tapes, and life some light weights.
I'll be staying at the Marriott and I called ahead and they already told me they have a fitness center that's open 24 hours a day so that's good...I'll bring my workout clothes and bathing suit. We will be served a continental breakfast daily so I am assuming I'll be on my own for lunch and dinner. I requested a refrigerator be placed in my room, but I'm not sure if they will be able to accommodate my request.
Any ideas would be appeciated. I went away before and brought all my own snacks and it worked out well but, that's when I was on Weight Watcher's. This is a bit different. Thanks! Gina

Hi Gina,
Hopefully they will have some fresh fruit available for breakfast.
I really like dried apricots. You can snack on them during the conference and be less obvious than if you were eating an apple or other whole fruit. If you go with the Laughing Cow cheese that Cathy mentioned, it's great on reduced fat Triscuits (7 = 1 grain serving). I find this to be a very filling snack.
I don't imagine you'd want to go to this expense for one trip, but if you travel often, you can buy a very small refrigerator that has an adaptor so you can either plug it into the car lighter or to an outlet for around $50. I bought one of these for my sister who has medication that needs to be refrigerated, and who travels often. She loves it.

As someone who's ordered catering at many hotels before, continentals come basic and upgraded. Basic is with coffee, juice and danishes. (Some hotels the juice is upgraded too.) Upgraded, ie more expensive per person, is with fruit. Anything else can be added, but all at a cost. Because it is so incredibly expensive for coffee, juice and a muffin, most conferences don't do fruit anymore. So, I would plan ahead for breakfast as well. If you will be eating in restaurants, it's pretty easy to stay on track even on convention food. Eat sandwiches without or with half the bun, watch the sauces on any meat, chicken or fish, and order double veggies instead of rice or potatoes (or if you're at a preset meal event, put your starch on your bread plate and send it away with the first passing hotel staffer).
If you can take a cooler, you'll be set. However, if you're flying that may be impossible. One possibility if you don't get a refrigerator in your room is going to a local grocery store once you're in town and buying a disposable cooler and any perishables there. You'll have to dump it and refill the ice each day, but it should keep everything from going bad.
Hope you have a great trip!
