Moving on to P2, but frustrated

I have officially moved on to phase 2, but I am really frustrated.  I dropped 5 pounds quickly on phase 1, but got stuck there.  I've been off work all week and have been working out everyday, 30-60 minutes of cardio per day plus weight or core training each day as well.  Yet I'm not getting past that 5 pounds.

What's really frustrating is that I am being faithful to the diet.  No cheating.  For someone who has a huge sweet tooth, it's hard to continue to give up the sweets when the results have died.  I can maintain my weight eating the old way that I ate so why give up what I love to eat when I appear to be maintaining either way?

Thanks for letting me vent.  I'll stay on the diet at least through the end of the  month and I am praying I get over this weight loss hump.

Hi Susan,

First, congrats on losing those 5lbs! That's pretty impressive!

Second, I'm absolutely rowing in your boat with you!! For the past five years, I have weighed 120lbs, and have managed to always maintain it. And, let me tell you, I did not have a very good diet! I was eating white starches with nearly every meal, chocolate for breakfast, ice cream for a snack, drinking daily frapuccinos, and having chips before bed!! Really, I was a junk food maniac!

When I decided I needed to change my wicked ways and start eating healthy, I was expecting to see some weight loss! Alas, I have not yet seen any fluxuation on the scale, despite giving up ALL of my bad eating habbits and becoming an exercise machine!!

Obviously it's incredibly frustrating, but I've decided to keep at it because I know that EVENTUALLY there's got to be a change in my weight. For me, I made the decision that, even if it takes months or years, losing these 15lbs by ignoring my junk food urges will be worthwhile. I figure that as long as I'm not putting bad stuff back into my body, it will eventually have to drop that fat.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know that I totally hear ya, and I hope that you stick with it. We can suffer through our cravings together!! I just know that we'll see some positive results soon. WE'VE JUST GOTTA!! Haha!

All the best!!!

Susan, I totally understand your frustration. I started the SBD on 2/21/05, but I started on P2. I have only lost 10 1/2 lbs. to date (I'm 5'2, 36 years old and have gone from 140 lbs. to 129.5 lbs. with a final goal of 125 lbs.). I generally work out 4-5 days a week (weights and cardio-- and with a trainer one of those days) and follow the SB plan almost perfectly. I get really frustrated at how slowwwwwwly this weight loss has been for me, but I have learned a few important things along the way that might help you too...

1. You might not lose a lot if you're weight training. My trainer tells me all the time that it's very difficult to actually lose a lot of weight when you're building muscle. I try to go by how my clothes are fitting more than anything else. I've gone from a size 8/10 to a size 4/6 since starting the SBD and I'm THRILLED about that! I also think it's really helpful to take measurements. I do this every month and am so happy at how many inches I've lost. That's a real motivator when the scale isn't budging.

2. I don't know what your stats are, but the less amount of weight you have to lose, generally the slower you'll lose it. That's a good thing, really, because usually a slow loss means a more permenant loss. That's definitely been the case for me.

3. Being patient is NOT my thing, but I've learned that if I'm patient, the weight WILL come off. I had a FOUR month stall-- my body was just stuck at 144 lbs.-- and through changing my menu up, altering my workout a little and utilizing a lot of patience, the scale started moving again.

4. Use this board for support. Almost everyone here has had at least a few frustrating moments on this diet and we can all help each other out. I whine a lot and get lots of great advice here.

5. I have, many times, felt the same as you-- "I can maintain my weight eating the old way that I ate so why give up what I love to eat when I appear to be maintaining either way?" But I've learned that this way is the HEALTHIER way and I do feel so much better when I eat right. I still treat (and cheat) from time to time, but overall I don't ever feel deprived on P2. And, again, patience is key!

I hope this helps some. Don't give up-- You'll be so glad you stuck it out!!!

Susan-
Stick with it! First of all, 5 pounds is great! Secondly, if you've changed your eating habits for the better there is no way that the weight won't come off eventually. I gained back a couple pounds after phase 1, which was SO frustrating, so believe me, I know how you feel. But it's worth it, I promise you! My experience has been that I stall for a couple of weeks and then drop 2 pounds and then stall again- I definately do not lose at a consistent rate. So I'm guessing that even if the scale isn't budging at the moment, it will sooner or later. Try not to get discouraged by the number on the scale and remind yourself that you are changing your way of eating for life. Trust me, when your clothes start feeling loose and you can tell a difference in your body, you will feel SO good and it will have all been worth it. Good luck!!

I felt a lot like you after phase 1. I had lost a definite 3 lbs (maybe 6 if you counted a few I lost before officially starting) . I had been wooed by the book claim of 8-13. However, I have now been on SB for 2 months and I'm down 15 so don't lose heart. I've really liked phase 2, but I've felt frustrated by stalls a few times. Read "Plateau Solutions" and a link contained within that posting about why the scales lie. THey are both very helpful. I've actually come to feel like I'm often doing my "best work" when that needle isn't budging... it precedes a drop. If you haven't taken measurements do it. Good luck!
