Question about grain servings?

Why is it that 1 grain/starch serving = 30 grams (1oz) for breads but yet for my Uncle Sam's cereal I can have 1 cup, which the box says 3/4 c=55g, so my 1 cup equals more than 60g. Wouldn't that really be counted as 2 grain/starch servings?

Another oddball question . . .

In Uncle sam's cereal there is whole flaxseed, and I remember reading from Dr A that whole flaxseed will pass undigested without getting the fiber benefits. So, does that mean I'm not getting the fiber benefits from the whole flaxseed in the cereal? Is the flaxseed the main reason why the fiber content is so high with this cereal?

Every once in awhile my brain needs to dissect things & overthink things, lol. Can ya tell?

Good questions Doreen - I have no idea the answer, but I am sure Cathy or Maggie will.

But you are definitely right - on my box of Uncle Sam it says 3/4 cup is 55g. That would make 1 cup about 2 grain servings, but it is listed as 1 cup = 1 serving on our Recommended Bread and Cereal List. Not sure why.

I'm also curious about the whole flax seed too. I JUST bought my first box of Uncle Sam last week, thinking I was trying to get in some flax seed (I mix it with other cereals though, the flavor is too strong for me on its own) But you are right, Dr. A said that there isn't much benefit from whole flax seed - guess I need to read more carefully!

Hi Doreen,

You are correct that the serving size for bread and cereal is 30 grams.

Cathy, since you enjoy my thought provoking questions (lol) . . .

Why does our "starting p2" thread say 1 cup Uncle Sam's cereal is a serving when actually its 2 servings?

For the past few days I've been enjoying 1 c Uncle Sam's cereal *AND* having 2 more grains (1 lunch, 1 supper) so that means I've been eating 4 grains a day! Holy cow! I sure hope that didn't mess up my weekly weight loss cuz I tend to obsess over seeing that loss weekly & would be so upset if unknowingly it sabbotaged my good efforts.

What the heck did I stumble up on?

:)

Doreen,

This is not a list that I compile and keep track of.

I've definately learned to be a label reader over the last 6 months :)

I just assumed that I missed something somewhere & there was a reason beyond my limited knowledge on why the variation. Guess I should believe more in my hard learned knowledge!

Sometimes I still feel like a novice. I've come so far yet I'm still learning so much.

Thanks for the input! :)

Doreen - I wouldn't worry too much about having the 4 grain servings. I've done that QUITE often all along in phase 2. And now that I am on phase 3 I do it even more often! Especially with cereal, 1/2 just doesn't fill me up. I'd rather have a whole cup, and feel like I am getting fulfilled at breakfast. Then I am less likely to get "mid-morning munchies" and cheat. An extra 1/2 cup Uncle Sam's at breakfast is WAY better than reaching for a donut by 10am!

I'm with you on the having 1 cup & actually feeling fullfilled for breakfast. Just wished I "knew" that I should have counted it as 2 servings. Live & learn, right?!

I'm so close now to goal (5 lbs as of last week's weigh-in but we'll see tomorrow) & I'm trying to be extra careful since I've heard the last 10 or so pounds can be harder.

How's your p3 going? Are you still maintaining or better yet, losing?

I just got back 4 rolls of film (out of the 16 I sent) back & not even one picture of myself in the bunch :( Guess I hid from the camera more than I thought. Hopefully, the other rolls have one of me to use as my "before" picture.

Thanks for the "pep" talk!

I'm doing fine on p3 - I don't really think I am doing anything TOO different than phase 2 though. Just not stressing quite so much over measurements/counting servings, etc. (not that I was ever really strict to begin with though!)
I'm maintaining right at 133 so far. I pretty much cruised right on down to my goal easily (135) and 2lbs beyond, but have stopped here for about 3 weeks. But the main difference is I haven't been exercising these last 3 weeks. That was the key for me, from Jan-Aug I was working out 5-6 times a week. Things got busy and I slacked off. So I haven't lost any more lately, but haven't gained either, so I'm okay with that.
BUT - now that the kids are back in school, I will be picking up the exercise again and maybe the scale will head down further! If not, that's okay too.

Hi Doreen,

The recommendation of 1 cup of Uncle Sam cereal goes all the way back to the very old Recommended Breads & Cereals list that came originally from an old Daily Dish in 2003 I believe, from the South Beach website:

We used to bump up this old list for a long time.
