Cereal News! In looking up a cereal answer for someone on the SBD official site , I came across the approval of some cereals that were "no-nos" for South Beach, and are now approved. The primary reason these weren't allowed before was because of the sugar content. While the guideline for cereal fiber has gone down over time, the sugar gram guideline has remained the same - 8 or less grams of sugar per serving. GoLean Crunch as 13g sugar and Good Friends has 9g.
From SBD Ask the Nutritionist:
Q: Are any of these three acceptable for Phase II?

All of these are fine to have on Phase 2. We use a 1 ounce serving as a general guideline.

An answer to a very similar question from Nutritionist Margaret:

Yes, you may have Kashi Good Friends cereal in Phase 2. We generally count 1 ounce as one serving. Enjoy!

Maggie: I searched the site and was unable to come up with any announcement of a guideline change for cereals that include more sugar allowed. So, I've just posted the following question on Ask The Nutritionists. I'll share the results here when I get an answer.

Dear Nutritionists,
I've seen in fairly recent answers that cereals which used to be non-SBD approved, partly because of being too high in sugars (more than 8 grams), have now been approved. These include Kashi GoLean Crunch (13g sugar) and Kashi Good Friends (9g sugar). These answers appeared in posts 23127.2 and 23837.2.
The original cereal guideline was at least 8g fiber and 8g or less sugar per 1 ounce serving. Later, it was changed to at least 6g fiber and 8g or less sugar per 1 ounce serving. More recently, the guideline was dropped to this: "In our new cereal guidelines, cereals with 3.0 grams - 4.9 grams of fiber per serving are considered "good" fiber choices. Those with 5.0 grams or more per serving are considered "high" sources of fiber. A serving size is one ounce (30 grams). We recommend trying to find a cereal on the upper end of "good" and reaching toward "high". Try to find one with 8 or less grams of sugar per serving."
As the fiber requirement has dropped, the sugar requirement has stayed the same. That is, until the approval of the cereals mentioned above. Has the SBD guideline for grams of sugar in cereals been changed?
Thank you in advance.

I just found a very recent post, only two days old, still quoting the cereal guideline as 8 or less grams
Interesting you should post this today. This morning my son complained that while he got dressed (he was cold in his jammies) his Kashi Go Lean Chrunch got soggy (didn't know it was possible!!). I tasted it and recalled how yummy it is. mmmmm if it is legal I might have to have it once or twice a month.
I'll definitely check back on this thread!

Yep, he just answered my question on the SBD Online, yesterday.
Look for these cereals listed in the new updated Recommended Breads And Cereals list.
