Does anyone know if this is allowed? It is made with enriched semolina. A serving has 190 calories and 10 fat calories, 1g of fat and 42g of carbs, 4 of which are dietary fiber and 1 of sugar. I love pasta but I am leary of trying whole wheat pasta since it just seems "not right" to me.
Karen, here is the official answer from the SBD nutritionist:
We have received a number of questions about whether Dreamfields pasta is a good choice on the South Beach Diet. The confusion over this particular brand of pasta is understandable. There is a large red box that advertises only 5 gm digestible carbs per serving on the front of the package. The nutritional analysis for 2 ounces (double the amt. of a SBD serving): Total Carbs: 42 gm; Dietary Fiber 4 gm; Sugars 1 gm; Protein 7 gm. The list of ingredients are: Enriched semolina (nutrients added back in listed), fiber blend (diff. fiber sources listed), sorbitol, wheat gluten, potassium chloride.
Most manufacturers take the total carbs and subtract the fiber and sugar alcohols to get net carbs. All of the carbohydrate except the fiber and sugar alcohol content is what Dreamfield's is considering "digestible carbohydrate". It is important to remember that there are no hard and fast rules on this as FDA has not established any guidelines on this. Doing our math using what most manufacturers use with calculating net carbs, the net carbs on this product for 2 servings is 37 gm carbs which would be the digestible carbs not 5 gms Net Carbs.
The bottom line is that this product is considered an enriched pasta. The information on the box is misleading.
Overall, the best pasta choices for phase 2 are whole wheat (such as the Hodgson Mills product) followed by soy. The serving size is 1/2 cup cooked.
I hope this information helps. Please let me know if you need further help.
I saw that! It has more carbs than the white stuff! I laughed at that, but I guess since its wheat, its has more protein and fiber, so probably healthier. Try wheat, you may like it. But if not, don't eat white pasta too often, maybe once/twice a week, but make it a day you can get some excersize in, I see you have a family. Make it a family affair, take a half hour walk with them, it'll burn those carbs and make you and your family closer. Love Leslie
Hi,
Unfortunately the Dreamfields brand contains a large amount of sugar alcohols and does not fit the South Beach guidelines.

As Cathy said, Barilla Plus is good on SBD.
