Phase 2 Questions

Well bf has started phase 2 today, although I don't think he has actually eaten any phase 2 foods yet! Imagine that! Just a few questions though.....

Ouaker oatmeal....I know the site says to only use the slow cooking stuff, but I am assuming that means just the flavored packets? Today at the store we compared the big canisters of Quaker quick oats and old fashioned oats. They all had the exact same ingredients etc. so we went with the quick.

Egg rolls? Could these be SBD friendly? The wrappers I saw I think had 0.5 g sugar in them each and I don't even think "sugar" was an added ingredient. I looked at these awhile ago so don't remember the exact ingredient list, but thought of them again today.

Has anyone found a western/french/catalina dressing that is SBD friendly? I think today we looked at just about every bottle and could not find any. The only thing bf has been using is the Just 2 Good Ranch since he seems to really only like ranch and french.

Thanks in advance! Tracy

Hi Tracy,

Congrats to BF on reaching Phase 2. Is he apprehensive about adding fruits and grains? There are 2 approaches he can take. Check this out:

Thanks for answering my questions Karen. I did buy some prepackaged egg rolls, they are very low in fat, but the wrap is made with wheat flour, but it also had corn starch and potato flour in the ingredients. So is that bad? Bf doesn't have to eat them anyways, the kids like them.

Also, with pastas, the semolina (sp?) is not a wise choice, correct? Isn't that just another name for enriched wheat pasta? I got some of the Hogston Mills, but the Barilla plus is okay also? the only carbs we have added since bf moved to phase 2 is a hamburger and hot dog bun, some waffles, and SF/FF chocolate pudding. We found a great brand at walmart and the buns are very fluffy and better than regular buns. We are finding some of this healthier stuff tastes a lot better. We got some of the lite wheat eggo waffles, which are yummy but the SF syrup is not. I got some SF DaVinci vanilla syrup though that bf can try. I'm going to try it in my coffee because I am a flavored coffee creamer/cappucino junkie. I'll admit that I have not been following P2 to a tee, but I have noticed how crappy and bloated I feel when I do stray from the beach. This diet has really taught us a lot.

One more ? margarine, we got the smart balance stuff but it seems to have more fats in it than the normal country crock light that we usually get. Is the country crock light okay? Also the smart balance gets hard as a rock in the fridge so I have to take it out before I need to use it but then it melts and separates. We really don't use the margarine for much, we usually use the spray. just thought I would ask.

thanks again, Tracy (& Brian too)

Tracy (and Brian),

I did buy some prepackaged egg rolls, they are very low in fat, but the wrap is made with wheat flour, but it also had corn starch and potato flour in the ingredients. So is that bad? Bf doesn't have to eat them anyways, the kids like them. I would still pass on the egg rolls. I would guess that they are made with enriched wheat flour and the corn starch and potato flour don't cut it either.

Also, with pastas, the semolina (sp?) is not a wise choice, correct? Isn't that just another name for enriched wheat pasta? I got some of the Hogston Mills, but the Barilla plus is okay also? Semolina is OK. Products that list 'enriched wheat' are not OK. Both the Hodgson Mills and Barilla whole grain pastas are OK.

Darn, I thought I saw the eggo waffles approved in a message or something, for some reason it stuck in my mind and that is why we got them. Each waffle has 60 cal, 1 gram fat, no sat. or trans. fat, lists 5 sugars. Ingredients do have enriched wheat flour and sugar. Oops, I don't know where I got it in my head these were okay, I never really looked at the ingredient list.

Anyways, the buns we have been using are Village Hearth light wheat buns. per bun, 80 cal, .5 fat, sugars 3 g. ingredients are geesh, enriched unbleached flour (wheat flour, malted barley flour) also contains oat bran, wheat flour etc. Geesh, these aren't as good as I thought. Ugh! I swear I am doing this all wrong. I guess Brian must have found this brand. I never would have bought anything that says enriched. So I guess this isn't a good brand. I guess I am just having a bad SBD day! But that is how you learn. Oh well, I won't give up! Tracy

Tracy,

When you look at breads and cereals first look at the ingredient list. The word 'enriched' is a red flag. It means that manufacturing has stripped 'the good stuff' away from the grain - something you don't want. You want foods as close to nature as possible so that your body can work at digesting it. A very simplistic way of looking at it!! Also, you want to make sure there are no added sugars, corn syrup, molasses, honey, etc.

Second, look at the fiber content and serving size. For grains, we look for 3 grams of fiber per 1 oz. serving (30 grams). The recommended waffles are Kashi GoLean frozen waffles - original

Thanks again! I think we got lost in the bread aisle because we looked at so many packages that I think we got lost and focused on the fiber, sugars etc. I will be looking for these breads now! Can't believe I made such a big goof!

And yeah, there is an approved waffle, so I am not totally out of my mind, I just had the wrong brand!

Bf and I are going out of town this weekend because the kids are going to their aunt's, so that may be a challenge, we haven't done much eating out on this diet, but I think we will do okay!

Have a great weekend! Tracy
