McCann's Irish oatmeal vs. Quaker?

I finally found a can of McCann's Steel Cut Oatmeal after a long & hard search! I paid $7.19 for the 28 oz can - ouch! Nothing like the $1 on sale cost of my store brand - lol!
After reading the nutritional info, I got to thinking (lol this could be dangerous). Nutritionally speaking, both oatmeals are the same. Why is the McCann's oatmeal so much more money & is it anymore better for you really? Ok, I admit, I haven't tried it yet so maybe some can argue taste is the reason?
I think I remember Maggie posting a picture of the McCann's - could you post it again to make sure I have the right one?
Also, I remember reading posts on cooking the McCann's & that it was a long process. Well, on my can, the only directions are cooking for Irish porridge which basically says to cook 1 cup oatmeal in 4 cups water for 30 mins on the stove. Sound right? What the heck do you do with all that leftover oatmeal? Does it get "dry" in the fridge especially when it comes time to reheat it?
My (cheap) store bought 5 minutes on the store oatmeal is looking better & better to me.
McCann's oatmeal lovers - help me understand this food! ;)

Hi Doreen,
The McCann's steel cut oats are a different texture than the Quaker oats.
Thanks Cathy. I am looking forward to trying them since they get such great reviews here on the boards.
I did do a location search at the website & found multiple store in my area that sells that cheaper brand. What section do you usually find Bob's Red Mill brand? I have a good sense of where things are in my supermarket(s) & haven't bumped into this brand although the search engine says they carry it.
And, one more question, isn't it "bad" to leave food out overnight like in the overnight soak method? You always hear about not letting food sit at room temp for long periods.
TIA!

I believe that Bob's is in the natural food section of my grocery store.

Why Steel-cut Oats?
Steel-Cut Oats are whole grain groats (the inner portion of the oat kernel) which have been cut into two or three pieces using steel discs. Golden in colour and resembling mini rice particles, they are as nature intended – nothing added and nothing taken out.
How are they different from Rolled Oats?
Rolled oats are flake oats that have been steamed, rolled, re-steamed and toasted. Due to all of this additional processing they have lost some of their natural taste, goodness and texture.
What makes McCann's Steel-cut Oats so special?
Grains are essential to a healthy lifestyle and form the foundation of the food pyramid. Steel-Cut oats are inherently full of nutritional value and are high in B-Vitamins, calcium, protein and fiber while low in salt and unsaturated fat. One cup of Steel-Cut oatmeal contains more fiber than a bran muffin and twice as much fibre as Cream of Wheat. The quality of Irish Oats and the distinctive crunchy texture make McCann's Steel-Cuts a gourmet delight.
Thanks for the clarifacation everyone!
I'll let you know how I make out!

I'm not much of an oatmeal eater at all but I love steel cut oats!
Hi Doreen,
Steel-cut oats are much more dense.
Maggie, great explanation - thank you!
All this talk about the McCann's is making me very curious. Tomorrow I pop open that can (actually tonight I will make it) & try it! I'm a little nervous though - I hope for me it will measure up!

I made the McCann's Steel Cut Oatmeal last night in the crockpot and it worked really well for me. I just heated up a serving this morning and it was ready to go. Thanks for the suggestion!!!
I have never been an oatmeal person, but I thought I would try it, and I really liked it. I just put cinamon, vanilla, and splenda. Yummy!!! I also noticed it was more filling than cereal.
Thanks again for the ideas.
Amy :)
Hi Amy,
I'm glad that you liked the oatmeal.
