What do you bring to work?

I tend to bring a lot of foods with me to work, for lunch and snacks during the day. I have an hour drive each way, so if I don't eat something before going home, I end up ravenous, which is never a happy equation since I sometimes have portion control issues. ;)

I usually eat breakfast around 6-6:30 AM, snack at 10:00 AM, lunch 1:30 PM, snack again 3:30 or 4 PM, and then dinner around 7. I try not to eat after dinner, but I do include a dessert and/or snack with "dinner" to make sure I get enough to eat during the day.

Here's what I usually bring with me: (I pick and choose whatever sounds best at the time, and don't eat it all in the same day.

Chopped raw rutabaga
Sliced raw yellow or green squash
Sliced raw green pepper
Sliced raw cucumber
Raw radishes
Chopped raw broccoli
Roasted chick peas with cajun spice
Sliced raw mushrooms
Sugar-free jello
Lite yogurt
Little chunks of 2% cheddar or colby
Lean slices of deli ham or turkey (smoked)
Little bag of peanuts in the shell
Tuna or chicken salad with walnuts stuffed in celery
Grape tomatoes

Now that I'm on Phase II, I also bring an occasional apple, tangerine or pear. Today I've actually got half a tuna-melt (on half a whole-grain english muffin, with low-fat cheese) for an extra treat.

My at-home treats for snacking are chick peas, rutabaga, homemade low-fat bean soup (either soup or just the broth), and various creations with ricotta cheese. Oh, and my new favorite dessert is 1/2 cup low-fat ricotta, 3 strawberries diced up, and half a packet of Equal. Mix well, and drizzle lightly with sugar-free chocolate syrup. Optional: A few slivered almonds. Mmmm!

Anyone else want to share what you bring with you to eat? Or snack on at home? I'm always interested in new ideas.

Thanks, Maggie! Your ideas sound yummy. :)

I noticed you tend to eat peanut-butter with fruit -- should I be adding a 'carb competitor' to my fruits as well as to my grains?

Hi Angelle,

Yes, it helps just as much to add a "carb competitor" to fruit, as to grains.

All right, I'll start making an effort to have something with my fruit. I've been having turkey bacon with the oatmeal pancakes, and eat peanut-butter with oatmeal, but I hadn't thought of doing that with fruits, too. It makes sense!

On a different note, would you be willing to share your chicken teriyaki and bbq chicken crock-pot recipes? I'll bet my husband would love those!

And do you have any idea how to grill salmon in a George Forman? I've never made seafood before, lol!

Sorry for all the questions. The last time I did SBD I was by myself, and I wasn't picky about making a lot of new foods. This time I'm keeping hubby entertained too, so I'm being more creative. :)

I take sunflower seeds in the car... you can eat a ton of those babies and they take forever so you really have to work at it! LOL! I also take celery & PB to the gym. This is seriously one of my favorite all around SBD munchies. :-) Hard boiled eggs are also very portable. I'm in P2 now also so glad I can have carrots again as they are so easy & portable.

For at home snacks, here are 2 of my faves:

1) Nuke a cheese stick until melty (either soft or completely melted, up to you). Top w/spag. sauce. Not as great at veggies since little fiber but it feels like a "cheat" to me.

2)Slice tomatoes & sprinkle w/ basalmic vinegar or italian-esque dressing. Top w/moz &/or provolone cheese. Broil until cheese is bubbly & lightly browned. Sometimes I broil the tomoates a few minutes to warm if they have been in fridge and then add the cheese & finish broiling.

My fav snacks to bring to work are

Pink Lady apple w/ PB (this is my fav)
Celery with light laughing cow cheese
FF Plain yogurt w/ banana or strawberry
Grapes and cheese
cottage cheese w/ cherry tomatoes
Cucumber slices
Almonds or pistachoes

For lunch at work
I make meals ahead and freeze. My fav includes chili, salmon patties, and taco junk (i put this over lettuce). I also bring veggie burgers, and some frozen veggies to have with it. A quick lunch I really like is chefs salad, i put lunchmeat turkey, cherry tomatoes, cumcumbers, and ff cheese in mine. Or if I have to run errands on my lunch hr for something quick I make a wrap with turkey, lettuce, etc.

On the go, I keep a couple kashi go lean bars in my car just in case I need a little snack. I also keep a bottle of water in my car.

At home my fav snacks are
Smoothies ( i am truely addicted to these)
ff plain yogurt w/ fruit and kashi go lean cereal mixed in
sometimes I will have a small bowl of cereal
my fav dessert if I need it, is SB Peanut butter cup

HTH and thanks for the ideas, I'm always looking to try something new

Amy :)

Angelle,

I should add that any time I'm planning to have brown rice for a weeknight dinner, I pre-cook it.
