I should know this but are peas counted toward our legume allowance or just towards veggies? I know they're technically a legume but they seem so much more like a veggie than a bean. TIA!

Hi Nili,
Green peas are a phase 2 food and are considered a starchy vegetable. They should be limited to a 1/2 cup and counted toward your starch/grain servings.
No way! a starch/grain? I'd have never thought it. I mean, I know Sugar Busters included them in the sugary foods. Not that I eat them that often (actually, almost never, but I do put them in my veggie soup because they are in the mixed veggies bag).
In the good carbs guide that are listed as Good for phase 2 and 3.
Yup, it's true. Check it out in the Foods to Enjoy list for Phase 2:
Foods to Reintroduce & Avoid - Phase 2

Personally, I don't like the "Good Carbs, Good Fats Guide". There are lots of gray areas --- for example, it list foods as 'good' or 'eat rarely' - what exactly does that mean? The lists that we have formulated on this board are based on the lists from the original book and feedback from the nutritionists on the official South Beach Diet site.
