SBD and being PREGNANT???
| Wed, 03-08-2006 - 10:25pm |
Okay, so now that I've lost 5.5 lbs and lots of inches...I just found out I'm pregnant - YAY - so happy & excited - BUT not sure if it's okay to stay on SBD (not to loose weight) but to stay fit & health during pregnancy...We are currently on Phase 2
Any insight???

Hi,
Congratulations!
As Cathy said - its best to check with your doctor - BUT I warn you that if you say "South Beach DIET" - he/she may say absolutely not because they don't really know what it means. Most people (even drs) think South Beach is just another Atkins or when they hear the word "diet" think you will be severly restricting your calories to try and lose weight.
Basically this how I would describe it: "Is it okay if I use whole grains instead of refined ones, olive oil instead of butter, eat plenty of lean protein, healthy fats like avocado and nuts, lots and lots of vegetables, fresh fruit and non-fat dairy?" Because that is exactly what South Beach is. But could you imagine a doctor who would argue with that and say "nope, go to McD's everyday instead"?
As long as you don't restrict your eating AMOUNTS and eat enough calories and food for that baby to grow - eating the TYPES of food on South Beach is probably the healthiest thing you can do for your pregnancy!

Just to let you know, my SIL is pregnant and has stayed on the SBD.
I totally agree, MichaelAnn.
I would just choose foods from the SBD P2 lists and not worry about counting serving sizes of grains or fruits or dairy... you need plenty of healthy calories and a good variety of healthy foods when pregnant (and nursing, too!)
Congratulations!!!!
