Starting SBD in P2 today

Good morning!  Although I have posted a few questions in recent months, I never got around to starting SBD.  My name is Laurie and I am a SAHM to two beautiful DDs (4 and 2).  Six months before I got pg with DD#1 I quit smoking and immediately gained 20 lbs.  I gained 50 lbs. with my 1st pg and lost 45 of those lbs. before getting pg with #2.  I was still "up" 25 lbs, however, from my smoking days.  I gained 45 lbs. with pg #2 but only lost 26 of those lbs. (and it's 2 yrs. later).  I now have about 45 lbs. to loose.

Last Jan. I tried WW and lost 25 lbs. in a little over 2 mos.  I was eating all of my allotted Pts. as a bf mother but still lost weight rapidly (which was fine with me).  As soon as I started looking and feeling so much better about myself I - for some unknown reason - quit and started eating tons of junk food again (mostly chocolate and desserts).  In a matter of months I had regained all that I lost.

DH, who has gained at least 50-60 lbs. in the last 8 years, has finally decided to give SBD a try and we are both starting today.  He is in P1.

The only problems I think we'll face are that DH likes stuff like pork bacon, regular sausage and hot dogs.  He is not a veggie eater.  He also does not like trying new things and he does not want to go hungry (he refused to even try WW).  My problem is that I really like sweets and I will not use artificial sweeteners.  I have no idea how I am going to do on this diet but hope that, even though I have to start in P2, my cravings for sweets will lessen over the next few weeks.

The best part about doing this diet is that we both believe that it is a heathy diet and not some new fad or gimmick.  We both want to loose the weight and set better examples for our DDs, who eat a very healthy diet.

Well, off to make my first SBD-friendly breakfast!

Hi Laurie!! Welcome to the beach!! It's wonderful that you and your hubby are committed to doing this together. There's nothing better than support at home.

That's great that DH is willing to try some new things!

I prefer the texture and flavor of Morning Star Farms breakfast patties over the links. You could even 'trick' him - don't say they are soy, just say low-fat. Somthing else he may like are SBD faux-tatoes - mashed cauliflower - it's delicious!!

Welcome to some good eating!! I too am a SAHM with two boys (4 1/2 and 22 months) still working to get all my baby fat off. I hope that SBD works for you and your hubby. It truly is the healthiest way I've eaten in my entire life. It isn't super fast weight loss for me but I feel energetic and even when my kids and DH were all sick, I didn't get sick -- I attribute that wholly to my diet and exercise.

Not sure what you have against artificial sweeteners but they are a lifesaver for me. The sf maple syrup is yummy on grapefruit and Kashi GoLean waffles, and sf Fudgsicles end my meal almost every night as a signal to stop eating.

Fingers crossed and look forward to chatting with you.

Welcome to the board Laurie! I started South Beach with my dh also - his goal was to lose about 60lbs and my goal was to lose 45lbs - so very similar to you and your dh!

We've found that we are just as happy with turkey bacon, soy/low-fat sausage and low-fat hot dogs. There are some really good brands out there that make great healthy products that actually taste good! So hopefully your dh will give them a chance! As for veggies - we have great recipes here on the board. I was a veggie hater before South Beach, but I've found so many great recipes and ways to get creative with them. Here is a thread with lots of veggies ideas:

I had a HUGE sweet tooth also - South Beach has helped with that somewhat. I will say though, that I do feel comfortable using artificial sweeteners. So instead of having to give up having sweets, I just found South Beach friendly substitutes - like fudgsicles, sugar-free pudding, sugar-free ice cream, etc. I wish you lots of luck!

Your girls are just beautiful, by the way!
