Malitol?

I just recently had a small (half a miniature) of Hershey's Sugar Free chocolate and for me, it tasted good. I saw in the ingredients that Malitol is the primary sweetener, which is a sugar alcohol. I've heard of people having stomach gas and diarrhea as a result of malitol but I was fine with it (maybe because I had a very small serving).

Other than these untoward effects, are there any other negative effects of malitol especially for us who are trying to lose weight the healthy way?

Hi Joymags,

One of the major reasons that sweet treats are limited to 100 calories per day is because of those nasty side effects from sugar alcohols.

The first time I was on the Beach - I started eating the "sugar-free" chocolate bars with the sugar alcohols. They didn't bother my digestive system, but I did notice that when I got to rely on the sf chocolate bars (getting all my 100 treat calories every day from a "legal" candy bar) that my cravings went up.

My father - who monitors his blood sugar daily - noticed that too many sugar alcohols will spike his blood sugar.

So, it's probably something good to be aware of :)

Did you get the hershey special dark bars? OH MY - I have one of those little treats every few days and it's SO nice!

I exactly had that - Hershey's special dark miniature bars.

Thanks for all your helpful information - it tasted too good to be sugar-free and I'm sure it does cause one's blood sugar to spike up because of the suar alcohol. One half of a miniature 2x a week hopefully should not hurt. I hope....
