Beer & Wine

Could one of the CLs please check with a SB dietician to see what the best kinds (brands) of Lite Beer are, and also what TYPES of white wine are okay to have? For example, I'm assuming Riesling is a  no-no b/c it is sweet.

So what is the ruling now? White wine is fine and so is lite beer, or white wine is fine and lite beer is fine on occasion?

Thanks!

This info is from the official nutritionist:

In Phase 2 you can reintroduce alcohol into your food plan. We do recommend limiting alcohol to 1 serving for women and 1-2 servings for men. Which type you choose (wine, beer, ultra light beer, liquor) is a personal decision.

One drink is equal to:
· 0.5 ounces of distilled alcohol
· 3-5 ounces of wine
· 1.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits
. 12 oz beer

If you do include alcohol into your food plan and begin to experience weight loss stall I would recommend cutting back to a few servings per week. Light or low carbohydrate beer is a better choice than regular beer or ale.

The type of wine you drink is your choice.

For beers - the "ultra" light/low-carb ones are the best choice over regular "light" - but all the beers in this category have almost exactly the same amount of calories and carbs. Rolling Rock Green Light, Michelob Ultra, Aspen Edge, Budweiser Select are good examples. They are all about 80-90 calories and 2-3g carbs per serving. Most regular "light" beers are about 110-130 calories and 7-11g carbs. I know, I know - we don't count calories or carbs on South Beach - but it helps see why its worth it to choose the ultra light over the light.

Edited to ad:

Forgot to tell you my personal favorites! We just LOVE the Rolling Rock Green light. Its very refreshing and we drank it even before starting South Beach since I liked it better than regular beer! I also REALLY like the new Michelob Ultra Amber. The others are okay, and good in a pinch. Michelob Ultra is the main one that I see readily available at most bars/restaurants, so I will often have that one when we are out, but I don't like it enough to buy it for home.

Michael Ann,

I just wanted to thank you again for recommeding Rolling Rock Green Light. I had a Michelob Ultra on Friday night and wasn't too thrilled. Then on Saturday I tried the Rolling Rock Green Light and I was delighted!!! Thanks a lot!!!

I don't think I saw this one mentioned, and I'm not sure of the carbs in it, but one of our favorite lite beers is Sam Adams Lite.

Sam Adams Light is not low carb - it has almost 10 gram carb and 124 calories (compared to 2-3g carbs and 80-90 calories for the other beers I mentioned) Here is a chart with some comparisons of carbs/calroies in various light beers. Remember that "light" isn't the same as "low-carb"!
