Help, I'm upset!
| Mon, 04-17-2006 - 8:22am |
I'm really bummed! After Phase 1 I weighed 237.5. This morning I weighed myself after my first week of Phase 2---
I weigh 239.5!!! I'm upset because I gained 2 lbs. I know I followed it to a T! What could be the matter? Sheri

Absolutely nothing is the matter. This is VERY, VERY common and normal. I think just about everyone of us experienced a 1 or 2lb gain when we moved to phase 2. I did. I panicked of course, I had lost 8lbs in phase 1 and hated seeing ANY of it, even one pound, back on that scale. I just about quit, thinking "this won't work for me, only phase 1 worked and I can't do that forever" But thankfully Cathy talked me out of quitting! :-) If I had let those 2lbs I gained back that one week discourage me, then I would probably still be sitting here a size 16 instead of a 2/4. So I hung in there, and the next week I lost those 2 lbs, then went on to lose many, many more!
This is the "offical" word on it from the South Beach Diet nutritionalist:
Member Question: I just completed my first week on Phase 2 and didn't lose anything, even though I followed it to a tee! I was exercising, eating all the right things, and drinking my water. I lost 6 pounds in Phase 1 — HELP!
Maureen: Please keep in mind weight loss does not happen at a consistent rate. It is not uncommon to have weight loss one week and none the next — or even to gain. The key is to have an overall downward trend. This is very common the first couple of weeks in Phase 2. Try to be patient and allow for some more time. Usually, you will continue to lose weight. In the meantime, pay close attention to the amount of cheese, protein, and nuts you have. We often see members overdo it on these foods and experience a weight stall.

This may help as it helps me. I am obsessive about weighing myself every day so to keep myself from going crazy, as long as I've been keeping to SBD, I consider my "real weight" to be the lowest that I have weighed so far and ignore anything higher as it is likely a result of something too salty or the other reasons for a temporary gain. I notice increases all the time but overall, the weight goes down.
