Today at the grocery store I bought a box of Kraft SBD "100 Calorie Snack Bars." How do we count these? As a whole grain? Do they have to be counted as a sweet treat? I sure hope not b/c then you're done for the day with just one bar!!! I was also wondering how to count Kraft SBD cookies. Please advise. Thanks!

My guess is that they would be counted as a sweet treat.

The reason that there is a limit on "sweet treats" is to ensure that the majority of your calories come from nutrient dense whole foods. Even if they are packaged as "south beach," you are better off eating less processed foods like veggies, nuts, meats etc.

A CL can give you the final word.

Good luck,

Lisa.

I am incredibly confused by those SBD bars. I picked up the chocolate ones the other day at the grocery and read the ingredients. The first was soy nuggets, the second was SUGAR! Not sugar alcohol, just SUGAR. Isn't that a huge no-no?

It really is confusing, isn't it!? As I understand it, we can have very limited amounts of sugar, such as the 4 grams found in these snack bars. Most of the Kraft SBD foods have sugar in them. That drives me nuts b/c it seems so hypocritical.............I am sure one of the CLs will be able to advise on how to count these bars (whole grain or sweet treat, etc.). Either that or they will be able to ask a SBD nutritionist for the official word.

I am probably just being to literal about the whole thing. But you know - the bars don't seem to jive with the book (that I've now read 3 times)! I am SURE they are just fine, but I was confused enough to put the bars down and back away. :) I would eat the whole box in one day anyway, telling myself it was OK since they're SBD approved. I am a convenience-snack food junkie.

These bars have had lots of controversy.

LOL! I would too! Anytime I have tried to buy anything like that in the past, I just ate them all in one day. I don't even bother anymore :)

That is so funny--I know exactly what you mean! I just figured I'd give it another shot and see if my willpower has improved!!!

Well, since I already have the box in my pantry, I figure I'll give it a shot. So one of these bars will count as a grain serving, right? I think I'll wait until I'm up to 2-3 grains per day instead of 2 grains per day, rather than waste one of my grains on these. Thanks!
