I gained a pound--I'm frustrated!!!

I weighed myself today and I have gained a pound. I feel very frustrated by this b/c I have been walking like CRAZY! And I really don't think it's the 'muscle weighs more than fat' explanation. I think it is due to the fact that I went up to 2 grains and 2 fruits last week. And I gained a pound instead of losing a pound like I deserved to. So now it makes me even more apprehensive to go up to 2 - 3 grains and 2 - 3 fruits starting today. My total loss in 4 weeks is now 5.5 instead of 6.5 which it was last week. So not only did I not lose any weight this week, I GAINED a pound. I just feel very frustrated. I feel like if I eat even more fruit and grains, that is going to make me gain again next week. Advice? Words of compassion? People that have gone through the same thing?

Kate, lots of people have gone through this, and it is common.

Kate, I dug up some answers from the past that I thought you'd find helpful, from the nutritionist and Dr. Agatston.

Wow, Maggie, thank you SO much for your help! I too have PCOS and have a lot of weight to lose (between 50-55 pounds), so it really helps to hear about others who were in similar situations as mine. I am going to keep on truckin' b/c obviously it works--I'm getting advice from people who are now thin, but have once been where I am now. It helps so much to have support. I can't thank you enough.

We've all had a day that we go up a pound. When was the last time you weighed yourself? For all you know yesterday you were down two pounds just yesterday and today is just a water fluctuation. Last week my weight was:
Monday 117
Tuesday 119
Wednesday 117
Thurday 117
Friday 118
Saturday 120 (have NO idea where that came from - just water weight probably)
Sunday 117

Obviously I didn't lose/gain all those pounds of real fat! Imagine if the ONLY day I had weighed happened to be Saturday? I could have thought I gained 3 lbs! But I had known all the other weights throughout the week, so I wasn't worried. Its important to look at the OVERALL trend over time, not just the number from one day you happen to pick. Last week I weight 117 on five out of 7 days, so that is the number I use. Our weight can fluctuate so much day to day that just using one random day usually isn't an accurate picture of your progress!

My endocrinologist said that SBD is a great diet for people with PCOS. Since it is harder for people with PCOS to lose weight anyway, I can't lose sight of that. It helps to talk to people that really do UNDERSTAND what it feels like (such as the

I weigh myself once per week, on Thursdays. Perhaps I will start weighing myself every day to see if that helps. I just wonder if that would make me too scale obsessed? I have always been told to only weigh myself once per week. But seeing your weight fluctuations really does help put it in perspective. Thanks so much for sharing!

I personally weighed every day since I started South Beach (now its just habit in the morning - go potty, strip, step on scale, get in shower) I personally think it has helped me TREMENDOUSLY to NOT be scale obsessed LOL! It has shown me how one day's weight really doesn't mean much. If I was up one day, I just thought - well its probably water, I'll know more after tomorrow. I didn't stress, freak and panic for a whole week that I gained. It really helped me see the bigger picture and not focus so much on the scale because it showed me how wacky those numbers can be.

I sort of agree with you about P1. The one benefit of it for me, was it did get me to kick my candy habit, but except for that I think it sort of messed up my gi system. Except for the candy, I was eating very healthy foods...all 100% whole grains, fruits and veggies etc, with mainly low saturated fats. Since I had to give up the fruit and grain during P1, I had to increase my intake of the cheese type stuff and even though I was still eating veggies, and even eating more than I used to, it actually made me have a worse diet than what I had before and my whole GI system was just a mess. I was bloated and constipated etc. The day after I went ahead and added back in my grains I felt better and by 2 days of grains I felt great again and everything was back to normal except I was no longer eating the candy. Since I don't have much to lose and I want to make sure it stays off, weight loss hasn't been a big focus of P1 for me anyways. I didn't weigh myself when I started, but I think I've lost from 5-8 lbs. I sort of think the people who would benefit most from P1 are the ones who are not eating whole grains already and who are eating a lot of high fat foods. If you are always eating white bread and and double bacon cheeseburgers, then P1 would probably be a huge change in diet for the better. In retrospect I think I probably should have just started with P2, but I'm already there now so it doesn't matter :)
