P2 bread....

Hi All:

I purchased sourdough rolls this week because, according to the P2 list, they are ok but, I've been told that they are not allowed......

STARCHES (Start with one daily serving, gradually increase to 3 total servings daily.) Unless otherwise stated, choose whole grain products that have 3 grams of fiber or more per ounce.
Bagels, small, whole grain - 1/2, or 1 oz.
Barley - 1/2 cup
Bread
homemade breads using whole grains (buckwheat, whole wheat, spelt, whole oats, bran, rye)
multigrain
oat and bran
rye
sourdough (may be used, but whole grain is the best choice)...

Help! Am I misunderstanding the P2 list? I just want to make sure that I am not wasting money buying and trying out food that I should not have.

Hi Yvette,

Originally, sourdough bread was included on the P2 Foods to Enjoy list because it's acidic quality will slow digestion. However, after our fiber guidelines were clarified, it turns out it is not the best choice for SBD because it does not have enough

Yvette,

Here's a response from the official South Beach nutritionist regarding sourdough bread:

Sourdough bread does have a low enough glycemic index that would be allowed for phase 2. The acid that is used in making sourdough is what lowers its glycemic index. The SBD encourages the use of whole grain breads over sourdough bread. Sourdough bread is allowed, but is not the best choice.

Hi Cathy,

Thanks for this. I will definitely go for the multi-grains w/ 3gs of fiber (like the Arnold Carb Counting Multigrain).

Best,
