Whole wheat pancakes?

I haven't actually started Phase 2 yet, but I have been researching ahead in anticipation. I am doing a 3rd week of Phase 1 because there were things I had not realized and done improperly (thank you to this board for great insight, I have passed this link on to friends who are also doing the beach!!!).

I do have to say I am excited and scared as heck to add back in whole grains. I have always loved whole wheat pancakes and generally use the Carey's sugar free syrup and top them with fresh or frozen blueberries. This is on of my most favorite things for breakfast and it seems I can have them again in phase 2, but it is kinda scary!

I buy the Aunt Jamima's whole wheat pancakes. When I reaized that whole wheat was acceptable I checked the ingredients and it includes brown sugar and sugar. Is there another acceptable brand?

Just a suggestion...

I would hold off on doing pancakes more than once per week while you are on Phase 2. Try instead to eat oatmeal. Once you are in Phase 3, then I would eat the whole wheat pancakes as long as your weight loss is stable.

Why I say this is that for me, oatmeal is much more filling per serving than pancakes. When I have pancakes I end up consuming many more grain serving than I should (although you could be different).

I am not sure if there is a legal pre-made pancake. I do know that there is a legal waffle (Kashi I believe).

If you do want to have pancakes, I would make them yourself. There are many recipes in the section. Just do a search on it. I know I have posted recipes for both waffles and pancakes in the past. I ususally have them on Sunday morning after my longer workout.

Good luck!!

Rachel-

Chances are that the Aunt Jamima pancakes are not truly whole wheat. Usually these type of things are made with "enriched" wheat flour, not 100% whole GRAIN wheat flour. There is a difference. So if you see the word "enriched" on the label, they would be a no. Also, they need to have 3g fiber per ounce (about 30g)

I also believe the only pre-made pancake or waffle that is legal is the Kashi frozen waffles.

But you can make pancakes on your own, there are a number of recipes on the board if you do a search. Also there are a few mixes that are legal - we like Arrowhead Mills buckwheat pankcake mix or their Oat Pancake mix. Bob's Red Mill also makes a couple mixes that are whole grain.

The Aunt Jemima "whole" wheat pancakes aren't SBD friendly, sorry.

Ingredients: WHOLE WHEAT FLOUR, ENRICHED BLEACHED FLOUR (BLEACHED WHEAT FLOUR, NIACIN, REDUCED IRON, THIAMIN MONONITRATE, RIBOFLAVIN, FOLIC ACID), LEAVENING (SODIUM BICARBONATE, SODIUM ALUMINUM PHOSPHATE, MONOCALCIUM PHOSPHATE), BROWN SUGAR, SUGAR, DRIED MOLASSES, SALT, WHEAT GERM, HYDROXYLATED SOY LECITHIN, SOY FLOUR.

because of the second ingredient they aren't good at all, then the fourth, fifth and sixth ingredients are sugars. Also, at 3g fiber per 38 gram serving, they are technically below the fiber requirements.

Bob's Red Mill and Hodgson Mill (and the like) are all good mixes to try but I believe the official SBD statement is something on the order of "good for occasional use." Even those mixes don't have the required fiber. I'm actually not sure that any of the recipes from scratch would technically meet the fiber requirements. I've done some quick calculations and they don't in my mind.

However, if you like pancakes there are a few recipes on here for 'fake' pancakes and french toast that get good reviews. In fact, I was thinking about trying the pancakes made with cottage cheese this morning. If I do I'll report back on how it is! ;)

I didn't even think about french toast!!! That would be way easier with the right bread, egg and some no fat milk, a little cinnamon!

This would be okay right? Thanks ladies!

French toast is an excellent substitute.

Actually - the Arrowhead Mills mixes we use DO have enough fiber per serving...the Buckwheat has 7g fiber per a 45g serving (so for a 30g serving I believe that is 4.6g fiber) and the Oat Bran mix has 6g fiber per a 38g serving. So both are well within the limits. They probably still would say "occasional" use just because THEY didn't market their own pancake mix (yet)! But the ingredients are totally fine - exactly what you would use at home, for example the Oat Bran mix indgredients are:
organic whole grain wheat flour, organic oat bran, organic soymilk powder, organic wheat bran, baking powder

And the Buckwheat:
Ingredients: organic buckwheat flour, organic whole grain wheat flour, organic soymilk powder, baking powder, sea salt.

Anyhow- we use them as often as we like!

Don't forget about this version of "french toast"

http://messageboards.ivillage.com/iv-fbsouthbeach/?msg=15705.1

It is Mock French Toast and I believe isn't even a grain serving.

Cool MichaelAnn. I've bought Arrowhead Mills flours for years but I haven't seen the mixes anywhere here. The stores I shop in seldom have the AM flours either. They carry more Bob's and Hodgson Mills around here for some reason. I'll have to order the AM stuff online so we can try it. My favorite of all pancakes is buckwheat. Can't wait to try theirs.

I've only found them at Whole Foods or other health food stores. Their website has a link on where to find their products (you can pick the specific product then enter your zip code) :
