Well...

Last night I got wind of a family emergency and was up most of the night and ready to fly home today.

The emergency, as it turns out, is less critical than originally thought, but is still a pretty significant deal and I needed to fly home, if nothing else for my own peace of mind.

I lost control at the airport. My flight got delayed. My connecting flight got delayed. My delayed flight got delayed. It was horrible. I was stressed, emotional, and decided I DESERVED chocolate. Not a whole lot of things had the potential to make me feel better at that point so if I felt like some candy, then I was going to have some.

The whole day went downhill from there. It went from a king size Snickers to a king size bag of Skittles to mozzarella sticks from Arby's. In my defense, I was either in an airport or in the air for 10 hours today, quite a bit longer than it would have taken to DRIVE the distance. I was angry and annoyed and exhausted and I took it out on food.

Basically, my question is: I shoved all of this crap into my body today. My stomach hurt, I felt like crap because of it, and I am just wondering, I guess, what to expect from my body these next few days. Bloating? Weight gain? When will it take effect?

Thanks for listening, as usual.

Jen,
There is no good way to do air travel. If you have to do a last minute trip it's even harder because you can't plan to take foods with you. I used to work for an airline, and I'll tell you most of us didn't eat the food there. If you see a skinny pilot or flight attendant chances are they don't eat there either.

Don't beat yourself up over what you ate. Feeling sick about the food you ate just means your body is demanding good food, and that's great! You've trained it well, and done exactly what SBD has set out to do - eliminate the cravings. Think of this as pop quiz as how well this works for you. It passed! I'm willing to bet you won't be repeating this pop quiz any time soon, either.

If you haven't done the return portion of the trip yet, pack some food with you. DO NOT eat anything heavy before taking off. It'll help cause motion/air sickness. Try not to eat anything 20 min before take-off. The change in air pressure will increase the feeling of being sick. (That's how I had my only bout of air sickness, and it wasn't fun.) Veggies and nuts travel best. Bring a water bottle with you - refills are free, and you can ask to have it refilled at the bar or from one of the fountain drink stations. The water there is usually better than out of the drinking fountain. If you want flavor, bring some of the CL to go packets. (Several places like Wal-Mart and Target have come out with their brands of these.)

If you get hungry while you're there, ask any of the airline employees what they think of the food. We were all quite honest, and we knew where some good places to eat were. Sometimes another concorse will have different options, and they can let you know about delays in the flight that would make those options available. Not only that, but if things in the flight get moved up they won't think you are a no-show if you are running late back to the flight. They are not always that friendly, and sometimes there are serious time constraints, but it never hurts to ask.

You can check out info on airports on http://www.smilinjack.com. I'm sure many of us have flown through various airports, and someone might have a suggestion if you would let us know what airport you're going through.

Lastly, I hope everything proceeds to get better for you in the urgent matter.

Hugs,
Kelly
