Dinner afterthoughts and questions...

Ok, I hosted a wonderful dinner yesterday for 4 couples, including ourselves. It's my 1st big social event while on SBD and here are some of the observations and questions:

1. I successfully and painlessly avoided the appetizers table, although everything there looked and tasted (DH says so :) ) really great! Moreover, I didn't even have any cravings to pick up a potato chip or anything of this sort. I had a tiny piece (2x2") of rye bread with avocado dip. Yum! Dinner was very good - I made brown rice with edamame beans (wonderful recipe!), green salad, and florentine beef steaks. So far, so good, right? And then the desert comes....... Two cakes - one home-made by a friend, another one bought from the best cake bakery in town. I had two slices of both, small ones, a quarter of my palm, each. However, I felt sooooooo guilty having had the desert and I couldn't enjoy it at all because of that. I keep questioning if a piece of desert is worth these pangs of guilt.

Observations:
1. Lack of cravings for carbs and sweets (except exceptional cakes).
2. In spite of the cake, I haven't gained an ounce. Haven't lost an ounce either...

Questions:
1. How do you stay away from desert at a sit-down event? It's be obvious to everyone that you are not eating cake. I'd really hate my friends ahhhh-ing and ohhhh-ing and asking 'are you on a diet?'. Any tips and experiences would be so appreciated!

2. I've noticed that alcohol is not sitting well with me since I've started SBD. I literally feel my body rejecting it. Is this a common thing?

3. What are the permissible alcohol items during Phase2 and what is the limit?

4. We are all human so diet slips are not unusual. However, would a piece of desert sabotage your weight loss significantly?

thanks a lot!

Sounds like a nice party ~ I guess my invitation was lost in the mail :-P

Let's see if I can help.

Questions:
1. How do you stay away from desert at a sit-down event? It's be obvious to everyone that you are not eating cake. I'd really hate my friends ahhhh-ing and ohhhh-ing and asking 'are you on a diet?'. Any tips and experiences would be so appreciated! I either use the 2-bite rule and taste the dessert, or have a small piece (as you did) and consider it a treat. As far as people noticing that I am dieting - I have never had that problem. I think that when people find out, they are jealous that I am eating healthy and they are not!

2. I've noticed that alcohol is not sitting well with me since I've started SBD. I literally feel my body rejecting it. Is this a common thing? That's something I've never heard of. What do you mean by 'rejecting'? What kind of alcohol and how much are we talking about?

3. What are the permissible alcohol items during Phase2 and what is the limit? Red wine is the best choice and you should have it while eating. I will post the SBD

Yeap, I've always preferred red wine. That's what I had yesterday too - 2 1/2 glasses. I guess that's make a full glass. Although it's a normal portion for me, I felt a bit queasy afterwards...

Even if you had dessert and wine, it sounds like you were able to avoid other temptions and didn't go overboard! You did great!

Cathy, my DH would be so happy if what you are saying comes true. I mean lack of craving for wine... All of his collection to himself :)

What is a 3 bite rule?`

This past Daily Dish should explain it:

How to Indulge in Dessert

(Published 8/15/03) When you're eating out, dessert is often a hard thing to pass up. Most of the time you need to say "no," but if it feels like a special occasion, make the most of it. Here's how:

  • Fruit with ice cream: If fresh fruit would do the trick, have that. If fruit with ice cream is what you want, that's fine, too. You can ask for them in separate dishes and make your own dessert, using 3 teaspoons of ice cream topped by the fresh fruit.
  • Cake to share: If only the most decadent chocolate cake will suffice, go ahead and order it-along with enough forks for everyone at the table. Have just three bites, eat them as slowly as possible, and then send the rest away with the first passing busboy. Three bites only: Try this experiment at home: Have three bites of any dessert, then stop and put the rest aside for a few minutes. You'll see that it was just as satisfying as eating the whole thing-and you'll still respect yourself in the morning.

Uhmmmmm, sounds very reasonable. I'll try that if I have to eat dessert next time. Thanks!
