"I hear a lot on this board about "steel cut" oatmeal. What is that? Is it something I have to go to a specialty helath food store for or is it located somewhere in the grocery store in a different area than the breakfast oatmeals?"
I grew up on Cream of Wheat also. I still love it, but don't eat much of it since Oatmeal is better for me. I also ate a lot of grits, I miss them also!

Rachel,
The one I use is Quaker Old-Fashioned Oats (with the guy on the front - he's a Quaker ;-) )
We choose long cooking oats - not instant - on SB. However, you can follow the microwave instructions for cooking them.
Yup, soy milk is good in it. :)
When I was growing up, I used to have cream of wheat with milk in it (and salt and butter), so soy milk and Smart Balance are my substitutes.

I'm sure it varies where you live.
