I finally found Steel Cut Oats and I don't know what to do with it. I never had it before but I heard everyone mention how filling and good it is - so here goes. The brand is Arrowhead Mills and the info is:
Serving Size 1/4 cup (41g)
Calories 160
Fat 3g
Carbs 27g
Fiber 8g
Sugars 0g
Ingredients Organic steel cut oats
Are these OK? If so, is 1/4 cup 1 serving?
Thanks

Thanks for the quick reply Cathy. I guess I will try them with some skim milk and splenda and maybe even some sliced fruit.
Do you usually cook a lot in advance and heat up servings as you eat it, or is it better to cook a serving at a time?
This is what I do...
I make about 4 servings at a time (4 cups water, 1 cup oats) I soak them overnight or they take WAY too long to cook in the morning. I like mine REALLY cooked through (no "bite" left) so to cook them from scratch takes more than 1.5 hr for me. I boil the water the night before, add the oats, turn off the heat, cover and let sit over night. In the morning I bring it back to a boil and cook about 20-25 min more (though the directions on mine say 10-12min, but they still taste raw to me at that point) I portion it out into 4 tupperwear containers and then just reheat in the microwave for a couple minutes each morning. I add some Smart Balance, couple packs of Splenda and cinnamon to mine. But you can dress it up any way that you do regular oatmeal (peanut butter, sf jam, cut up fruit, milk, etc.)

Most of us, I think, cook multiple servings at a time.
Here's the crockpot method:
Use 1 cup oats, 4 1/2 cups of water & 1/2 teaspoon salt. As an option, you can add some dried fruit like dried apple or diced up dried apricots. Cook on low for about 8 hours. These methods make 4 servings. And they stay very moist in the fridge and reheat perfectly in the microwave.
I cook it the same exact way as MichaelAnn.
I really want to try the steel cut oats as well. I have in my pantry, however, the Ouaker Oats oatmeal. It's not the minute kind, but the long cook version. Is this ok for now? I want to add this next week as part of my 2 grain servings.
TIA to anyone who can answer,
Carla :)
The regular (not quick-cooking) rolled oats are approved for P2. I believe a serving is 1/3 c uncooked. One of the CLs will probably chime in and give the official word. But in the meantime... Enjoy!
Deb
Hey thanks Deb.... I think so as well, but like you said, one of the CL's will probably chime in.
Thanks so much though
Happy Day, Carla :)
Maggie... I don't mean to chime in on someone else's question, but I understand that the long cook version of oatmeal is fine. My question is what is the method for cooking that? I usually make oatmeal with fat free evaporated milk, water, etc.... Should I use the ratio of 1 cup oats to 3 cups water like the steel oats? or just follow the directions on the container?
I'm just a little confused.
TIA, Carla :)
