Having trouble with grains...

Hi, all --
Posted this about an hour ago -- it hasn't shown up on the board yet, so if it ends up showing up twice, I beg your pardon!
I was just saying that this is my second week of phase 2, my weight is holding, no surprise there. I have been having a little trouble, every time I add in something whole wheat within an hour I feel drugged. So sleepy that I could fall asleep no matter what I am in the middle of doing.
I had a similar experience last time around on SBD, only the culprit was corn (discovered the rxn during a 'cheat') and the response was more aggravated. Since then I have learned to avoid corn, whether obvious or hidden (hfcs or corn solids). Going into a food-coma kinda takes the fun out of cheatin'...
Anyway, the ww products I ate were perfectly legal -- a pepperidge farm whole wheat english muffin one day and then some hodgson mills ww spaghetti another day. Both left me with the same sense of fatigue.
It reminds me of what this one doctor told me when I was checking out the food allergy/migraine possible connection. He said, "you are not truly allergic to these foods, but you are sensitive to so many foods it is a wonder you don't walk around feeling drugged all the time." I was discouraged and never went back to him -- the truth is I do go in and out of food induced brain fog a lot. Perhaps that is why i feel so good in phase one.
Advise me, ladies! Fruit adds back fine. I'm afraid to try rice and/or oats! I'm thinking I should avoid wheat.
I just need some feedback from anyone with thoughts on the matter.
Thanks!
Teresa

Hi Teresa,
I think you need to rely on other phase 2 foods.
Hi. There is such a thing as wheat allergies, of course.
Teresa - If I were you I'd try a gluten free diet for a few weeks and get your grains from the gluten free foods that you've been suggested above.
Thanks, Cathy,
Especially for that list of things I can eat, I needed that refocusing!
When eating white flour, I get sleepy and so I stimulate myself with sugar. Its not pretty.
Teresa
Thanks, Karen,
I'm pretty sure its not a true allergy, but a sensitivity. I really need to talk to my hubby about it, too, he knows so much about nutrition -- sometimes I just like to stay off his "food radar" whine whine whine.
Can you tell I hate giving things up? They say we become addicted to that which we are most allergic/sensitive.
I am going to my headache dr. today, not the guy I mentioned in my original post here, but I should bring this up.
Thanks again,
Teresa
Thanks, Kim --
I *so* needed to think about the next generation here. My little girlie, now that you make me think of it, is always asking for bread more than anything else. Perhaps she craves that which she is sensitive to as well. I need to do something about this, before it affects her weight/ mentality, etc.
I need to be thankful that I found this, not crabby that I have to give something up. So selfish!
I just watched that "tubby toddlers" show on TLC last night. I am so thankful that -- so far -- we are doing everything "right" health wise with our kids. I don't want to make any of my children lethargic because I don't want to be a role model. Pretty soon they will be doing "what I do" instead of "what I say." Time to be the role model!
Thank you so much,
Teresa
Still thinking about what you said -- I'm slow to draw conclusions....
Speaking of sleepy 1st graders -- I so often fell asleep in class no matter what the class was after lunch! I was the sleepy first grader! If I have heard my Mom say it once she said it a hundred times, "you just need more sleep than other people." Maybe it was the wheat all this time! Maybe my energy struggles will soon be over.
I guess its all wheat. Not just the over stimulating effects of white flour.
Having a gradual "aha moment"!
Teresa
Teresa,
I mentioned first graders because I've been wondering about MY first grader.
Hi Teresa...
sorry you are having so much trouble...
I have had various food sensitivities thoughout my life and I would suggest one thing, if you feel like it:
cut out all wheat, corn, dairy and soy for 2 weeks....then slowly add things in and see how you feel. Brain fog and lethargy would be a big no-no and you don't eat that again....but you may find one product is ok and another similar one is not...For example, bread might be awful for you...but crackers might be ok...
I've done this in the past to isolate what is the worst offender and these 4 things seem to be common among people with sensitivies. Given you know about corn...and sound like wheat is bad too..perhaps you should eliminate the other two and then add them in easily, just in case you are reacting to those as well...
good luck,
t

Isn't it heart rending to try to make the best decisions for your chidren? That is a long break between eating at school, glad they take a snack break. Traditional class rooms are not set up for those with focusing issues, but an understanding teacher and an involved parent make all the difference!!! My husband was telling me how his mom helped him through school with his focusing issues. Good luck with getting the food sorted out. I have a "veggie boy", too. He just eats so many veggies, prefers them to the main dish. Its different!(but good)
I hear you on the blood sugar woes. My hubby had to convince me I had issues with that as well!! South Beach really helps just by preventing alot of these things.
Your vent was for my benefit!! So far I'm just avoiding wheat, not challenging with that again yet.
