Couple dining out questions

Hi everyone.

Dh and I dine out very little, because he is always working. But on special occasions, we will like to go to a nice restaurant. It's during these times that I might not follow the plan to a T, and order some unfriendly things, knowing I'll jump back on the beach the very next meal.
But my question is, when I am out, say with a friend for nothing special, how do I know the choices I am making are ok? I mean, I know the basic guidlines, but say for instance, I want to order a grilled chicken sandwich, and I ask them to put it on sour dough. That sounds like something I would do. Have I made a good choice? I know salads and fresh fruit will always be a good pick, but sometimes you wanna have something that you don't have at home. It's hard to check labels on food you are getting at a restaurant!!
So I want to make a good choice just based on common sense.

One other question, I am noticing that a lot of restaurants now serve sugar free desserts. I realize this isn't something that I would want to have every night (well, I WOULD want to have it, but shouldn't lol), but are they a good choice for a little sweet treat? I notice Sugar free apple pie a lot. Are there hidden dangers there?

Thanks everyone!

Carla...this is what South Beach is all about.

Another idea if you want dessert while dining out - fresh fruit. Most restaurants offer some type of fruit dessert. If it contains any non-friendly ingredients ask them to omit them and have just the fruit.
