I have a huge problem and I don't know what to do about it. I was on P1 for about 1 1/2 weeks. My appendix bursts and I'm in the hospital for 4 days!!! I HAD to eat that nasty hospital food and I have gained a few pounds back, now should I go back to P1 or go ahead to P2, I'm confused I don't know what to do, PLEASE HELP!!!! Just to specify I lost 12lbs and gained 2-3lbs back.

This is just me, but I wouldn't do p1 over. I'd move into p2 starting with 1 fruit and 1 grain the first week. See how you do, and if you have any really bad cravings you could always go back to p1 for a few days to get the cravings under control. I'd be willing to bet you'll do fine. Sorry about the appendix - how miserable! Congrats on the weight loss! 12 lbs. is fantastic!! Even if you subtract the amount you gained back, it's still wonderful!

Hugs,
Rachel

First, I hope that you are doing better and have your strength back. Make sure that you take care of yourself. Second, congrats on losing 12lbs on P1! Third, the main question to ask yourself is "am I having cravings". The main purpose for P1 is to make sure that you have gotten passed your cravings (whatever they may be). If the answer is "yes, I am still craving...(whatever)", then perhaps you should think about doing P1 over. Or, at least until your cravings have passed. If the answer is "no, I am not having any cravings." Then move on to P1. If it were me, I would start off being very cautious on P2 by adding one fruit or one grain the first week and then adding the other the second week. Just to make sure that your addition of the fruit or grain doesn't trigger cravings. Again, that would totally be your decision, and just my 'opinion'.

Hi,

I agree with the other posters...first take care of yourself.

Phase 1 is not a punishment. Its not meant to go back to EVERY time you slip off plan.

If you were climbing a mountain and slipped back a few feet - would you go back to the bottom and start over? Of course not. The thought wouldn't even occur to you. You would naturally pick up from where you fell and move forward. That is the SAME attitude we need to apply to healthy eating. Otherwise this becomes a "diet" - which is it NOT.

I have many times where there were a few days I didn't eat great. I was hospitalized for 3 days about 2 months into phase 2 (influenza/dehydration). I was on an IV some of the time, but then had to eat some hospital food. Did I go back to phase 1? Nope. Went on vacation with dh for a week when I was almost to my goal weight. Did I eat perfect the whole week? No way. Did I go back to phase 1? Nope. We had to drive from CA to TX last year and it took 3.5 days. Did I eat perfect on the drive? Heck no, there aren't many restaurant choices off I-10 out in western TX! Did I go back to phase 1? Nope.

I have never gone back to phase 1, never, ever will. And I reached my goal weight and have maintained for over 1 year. Trust me, I've seen MANY people disappear off this board in the last 2 years. The one who have the wrong attitude (constantly going back to phase 1, never doing a full phase 2, being afraid of healthy fruits/grains) are not the ones who stick around and have success.

I appreciate your refreshing view on lifestyle change rather than the dreaded "diet". Thank you for being so honest and real in sharing your experience-based perspective with the rest of us. It is a natural mistake to see it as a scary thing to move into phase 2 and start incorporating fruits and grains, but it's encouraging to view it as you do, and see it as the lifestyle change that it is. Thanks for your input!
