Fiber & Low Carb Breads discussion....

Michael Ann brought up a good point about what is legal when it comes to these breads when she said:
"the South Beach Diet wraps have oat fiber as ingredient #3 and oat flour as in ingredient #4? Soy protein is also in there too."
Cathy you said these were not allowed. I think perhaps this is confusing.
Thanks for responding.
Linda

yes I am. They are legal as they are SBD. Just asking this question because Cathy said on the earlier discussion on this subject that these items were not legal.

There are many of the South Beach products that don't meet the guidelines. This has been discussed many times, that Dr. A "sold out" to Kraft.
For example, the cereal guidelines used to require 8g of fiber MINIMUM - but after the SB cereal came out they lowered to to whatever it is now (like 3.5g fiber?) so that the Kraft cereal would meet the guideline.
Also the diet condemned all meal replacement bars, frozen/prepared foods, etc. But of course that changed when they wanted to make money off of them.
BUT - again I am a hypocrite. I use the SBD products, some very frequently like the cereal bars. I do think they are "better" than SOME of the other convenience foods out there. But, I will also use other similar products that I feel follow the SBD philosophy (like the Kashi frozen meals or the Lean Cuisine whole grain meals) I do buy the SBD wraps, but would also still eat the La Tortilla Factory tortillas which are not approved because of the SAME "added" fiber in the SBD wraps.
Bottom line, I don't go by the nutritionalists any more about SPECIFIC products or brands. I use the guidelines/philosophies, common sense, my experience, etc. Once the SB products came out I do not feel that they are unbiased about approving or not approving a product soley based on its nutritional value.

thanks for clarifying all of this. I will use SBD products as needed. I also know that after a book is written new info comes to light and some things get updated.
Best regards
Linda
I agree that Dr. A sold out when he let Kraft market products with the South Beach name.
