Hi. I have been on South Beach Diet for quite a while now. I was about 15 pounds overweight and lost all of it. I was kind of coasting along for a while, being too liberal on Phase 3. Now I need to lose about 7 pounds all over again. I restarted on Phase 2 and can't seem to win the battle. I plan my meals, and eat fine all day long. However starting in the afternoon I start eating things I shouldn't: candy, cookies, chips, you name it. I know I should not have these things around, but there's always some reason - mainly the kids. How can I stop this madness? Every day I start out thinking I'm not going to binge on bad food; it's not worth it. But then I do. I always get back on track, but always fall off too. I remember how good it feels to be in control and how healthy and energized I felt when I was eating 100% South Beach and losing the weight. I want to feel that again. HELP!

Hi & welcome to the group!
I don't often recommend going back to phase 1 but it seems you need to get your cravings under control.
The main reason I think I have been able to maintain and stay on track for over 2 years now is that my house is about 99% South Beach friendly. I don't think my kids need to be putting sugar, junk food, candy, chips, etc. into their bodies any more than I do. In fact I think its even MORE important for them to eat healthy and nutritious food to nourish their growing bodies and minds. I don't see junk food to be just an issue of weight - its an issue of health and I want my kids to be as healthy as possible. Just think how much better YOU felt eating healthy - its the same with the kids! They can't verbally express it the same way, but I noticed a HUGE difference in my kids when we cut out the junk food. My ds does SO much better in school now that he eats things like regular oatmeal and turkey bacon for breakfast instead of sugary cereal. My dd used to have a major 4pm "meltdown" and get super grumpy. I learned it was a dip in blood sugar from eating too much junk earlier in the day. Once I made sure she ate plenty of protein and fiber to keep her blood sugar level - no more afternoon tantrums.
Not that my kids never get treats, they can have treats when we are out to dinner, at friends houses/parties, school parties, etc. But at home I feel no obligation to provide them with junk food.

Hi and welcome! I agree with Cathy, try Phase 1 for a couple of days to detox. See how it goes and keep us posted. Good luck!
Thanks for the responses!
I have tried a few times to go back to phase 1. It works and then I move to phase 2 and I'm fine for a few days until I start bingeing.
Could it possibly be the type of fruits/grain I am adding, or the combination of foods, or the time of day?
It could be.
Is it a true physical craving or a mental craving? Big difference between the two!
If I have the mental cravings, I usually go and brush my teeth. Sounds funny but most of the time it works. Something about the "minty" taste in my mouth makes food unappealing in addition to the thought that I don't want to ruin my teeth with food right after brushing!
Little quirks here and there seem to work for me for those darn mental cravings. Good Luck!
