SB Ceral Bars

I was just cruising the posts and I read that we can only have one cereal bar a week! I have been having one every morning because I just assumed I could! Could this be the reason for my weight loss stall?

I was also wondering about refried beans, they seem to be SBD friendly, any advice?

Thanks!

I'm not sure where you read that you can only have one cereal bar per week. They count as a grain serving and are permitted in phase 2.

Refried beans are allowed in any phase....I prefer to buy the fat-free variety.

This is from the official nutritionist:

Whole foods are always the best choice on the SBD. No matter how tempting convenience foods can be we would rather have you learn the principles and eating habits of the SBD right from the start. Kraft/SBD meal replacement bars can be used starting in Phase 2 of the SBD and we do not recommend these bars for daily use.

Here is an excerpt from our web site about these bars. "KRAFT: How do meal replacement bars fit into The South Beach Diet™ plan?

Meal replacements bars are designed as a substitute when you have to miss a meal or there are no healthy choices available. They are not meant to be eaten as a snack or instead of fresh whole food whenever that’s an option. If you’re on the run, grab a meal replacement bar and a piece of fruit or handful of cut-up veggies, plus a serving of low-fat or nonfat dairy for a nutritionally complete South Beach Diet™-friendly meal. One note: We recommend waiting until Phase 2 to use meal replacement bars. Meal replacement bars can be used at any meal time." Snack bars and cereal bars are not meal replacement bars so you would still need to have the recommended protein, veggies and fat for your meal. The snack bars and the cereal bars count as one starch serving.

Please remember that a bar itself is not a complete meal. Adding a serving of veggies, fruit and a milk serving helps to round out the meal. You would count the meal replacement bar as 2 starch servings. For other bars look for those that do not contain high fructose corn syrup or hydrogenated fats. Also look for a bar that has a mix of protein, fat and carb rather than one that is labeled 'high protein' bar. But again, a whole foods meal is the better choice.

I also recommend taking a look at our 'Quick Meals & Tips' located under 'food & recipes' in the left column to get ideas about how to put together simple meals quickly.

Please let us know if you have other questions.

Thanks for such a quick response. So it is OK to include a SB cereal bar in my breakfast every morning?

Here is the link to where I read only once a week.

I hope it works, if it doesn't I'll just cut and paste.
Thanks,

Krissy

Krissy,

I have a cereal bar just about EVERY day as a snack (usually as my morning snack after the gym with a smoothie, fruit or yogurt) I had read that same post a few weeks ago and was very surprised about the 1x per week thing. I didn't say anything because I generally get stomped on when I "rebel" and buck some of the rules. But bottom line - I don't that alone would cause your weight loss to stall. As I said, I've eaten one almost every day since they came out (almost 2yrs ago) and never stalled or had trouble losing.

I think that the meal replacement bars are what should be limited.

Agreed - though I wouldn't touch the meal replacement bars AT ALL - even once a week. With 18g sugar alcohols, they had me literally doubled over in pain the whole day the only time I tried one!

I actually have trouble with these (although the only ones I eat are Kashi Pumpkin Spice Flax --- they are delicious!). I can have one for dessert right after a meal, but I can't eat one as a snack, even with a little protein, or they seem to bring on cravings. So, just watch for cravings and you should be OK.

My first go around on SBD, every morning I would eat a cereal bar and the Blue bunny brand yogurt.
