Counting Calories?

Do you ladies do it?

There was talk in the eating everything in sight thread about calorie intake - in which they are so right... I did eat an enormous amount that day prob a couple hundred more than I usually do... which made me wonder... how many of us are counting calories? Roughly keeping track? Not paying attention at alL?!??!

One thing I've liked about SB is that even though the WL in phase 2 has been slow, it's not an "obsessive" diet for me.. more like a plan and I felt pretty good about sticking with healthy foods the day I was gorging and I really don't want to have to get too involved... like with calorie counting, carb counting (as other diets would have you do Atkins is it?), or points.

How successful it is to just maintain reg portions and stick with the foods to enjoy list? Long term that is. I know there are mishaps, birthday parties, the occasional bite of cookie dough and I guess I was considering this plan for life and that those things are a part of life... is that going to sabotage me?

Thoughts?

I totally think you are on the right track. I've had many days that I was STARVING for no apparent reason. I listened to my body and ate. That's what SBD is all about - fueling your body. Your body needs that fuel to revv up your metabolism. I don't believe are get "hungry" without a reason.

Seriously - to heck with calories. Fuel your body with good nutritious food until you are satisfied. That is what its all about!

Yes, 19 pounds in 11 weeks is a great rate of loss.

There's no actual "list" for calorie dense foods. I just try to watch portions of things like cheese, nuts, oil, salad dressing and sweet treats.

That's exactly how I approach it Sue! Although I *could* use lowfat milk I choose nonfat etc. Every little bit helps. It leaves me room to enjoy more of other things that I like better.

I need to look at calories a bit since I do not follow the plan servings to a "T." If I was, then I would not need to. Because I allow myself flexibilty in phase 3, I need to be more aware. If I eat an entire whole wheat bagel, I have to realize that I probably just had 400-500 calories - and even though it was WW, that can add up!

I also have an issue with portion control - especially at dinner. So, even though it may be good for me I still probably eat too much of it. I have been trying to serve smaller first portions so I can have "seconds" which helps me mentally. Same amount of food - it's all just a game I play!

I think we all have our way of dealing with things. For some people the stall in their weight loss because they eat too much and others because they eat too little. You need to discover how YOUR body adapts. If something isn't working, then tweak the program. However, just like Cathy said, if you are happy with your rate of weight loss, that is really all that matters!! That is the key - is it working for you.

Jennie, I think just reading some of your posts/journals that you may see stalls when your portions get a little bit big (even though they are SB approved foods). However, if you are like me and HATE portion control, it may just be something that you have to live with. You can still lose the weight, it just may take a bit longer. You just don't want to get frustrated and give up completely - that would be my main concern for you!!

Good luck,

Lisa.

I do think I eat a bit too much peanut butter but WOW I love it... and I can chow through some cashews too!!!!!

I've started putting my peanut butter on a banana and when the banana is gone, the PB gets put away - I think that is helping! lol

Lisa, I really appreciate the time you put into answering me and giving advice!! It's so great to have support like that!!!

I do have portion control problems... I have always been a big eater.... and it wasn't until the insulin resistance that I ever had to worry about what I ate... and then I didn't worry then.... blech - landing me where I am now... lol w/ the 70 extra lbs (well 35 now!!!)

I also think I need to cvery WHAT I eat.. I was making some of the same things each week b/c it was easy.... and this week really changed it up and found everything more satisfying so tonight DH and I will be on a new recipe hunt again!!!

Jen
