Should I start over?

I have been having a hard time this week after our vacation in Vegas & am wondering if it's best to start over with Phase 1 again, even if just for a week? I haven't been doing horribly, but eating way too many grain servings & nut servings & I just can't seem to get it under control. I guess it's better than indulging in fast food & desserts and maybe it's only TOM-related, but the salt in the nuts just tastes SO good right now and I can't stop eating them.

What do you think? I'm shooting to get into Onederland by our London trip on 9/21 and as of last WI, I had less than 12 lbs to go, but I don't know if the grains are creating cravings or what. I lost 8 lbs in the first two weeks (Phase 1), but since then, have only lost another 3. Again, not sure if the grains are causing it (although I am doing my best to get more exercise in) or if I am just a really slow loser. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I don't recommend going back to phase 1.

What types of grains do you think might be less "damaging" than others. Occasionally, I'll have the cereal bars for breakfast (although this does not create any cravings - they only occur in the afternoon). My afternoon grains might consist of a whole grain tortilla or slice of whole grain bread; for dinner it's usually brown rice or the Rice-A-Roni whole grain blends. I figured these would be the safest choices since they are fairly bland, but it's like once I eat one, I can't stop. But, I've doing good so far today, having had a cereal bar for breakfast, cashews for snack & I've had two large strawberries from a batch that a patient brought in to the office (it was a thank-you & she knows me well enough to NOT bring chocolate as a gift, LOL).

I don't think that the grains you're choosing are the problem.

I also wanted to ask if you are ONLY having a cereal bar for breakfast? You didn't mention any other food with it. If I have too small of a breakfast, I will be FAMISHED in the afternoon. I have to really "stock up" in the morning to keep the afternoon hunger away. As corny as it sounds, breakfast really is "the most important meal of the day".

Actually, my usual breakfast is eggs w/avocado & turkey bacon and a glass of milk; I only have the cereal bar once or twice a week at the most, if I'm running behind or am just not that hungry for a larger breakfast. But, my cravings have always happened, even with Weight Watchers & LA Weight Loss. I had hoped by cutting out sugar (or at least the bad sugar), it would help, but they still always seem to happen. The funny thing is, I didn't have the cravings during Phase 1. It was only when we started upping our grains/fruit to 2-3 servings a day/each that they started coming back. That's why I was wondering if a quick replay of Phase 1 would help jump-start my weight loss again & help kick those cravings again.

Also make sure they are "physical" cravings -not mental cravings ("desires") There is a difference. After 2.5 years I still occasionally have "desires" for certain foods - like if I smell something baking, see a commercial for something, have 1 bite of something "bad" - I will want it. Phase 1 does nothing about craving the TASTE of a certain food. All it does is rid us of the feeling of being hungry less than 2 hours after we've eaten a full meal. All it does is take away the "I ate a big huge bowl of pasta 45min ago, why am I already hungry again?" thing.

Only you really know if you are having full fledged physical cravings (hate the word - I prefer to call SBD cravings "low blood sugar induced hunger" - but I guess that doesn't look as good on the cover of a book)

Okay, so I'm back on track today, especially after I was happy to see I still had a one pound loss, even with all my extra grain binge-eating. I am trying different fruits (but mainly b/c a patient brought them to me as a thank-you) and hoping that I just don't get those cravings I kept having last week. In regards to physical or mental cravings, I know it wasn't mental b/c I would not crave a whole-wheat tortilla if it were mental, LOL. I would be digging into the Doritos & graham crackers that belong to our roommate. Surprisingly, I haven't touched ANY of his junk food since we started and it sits right out in front of us. I am very proud of myself for that. The DBF lost ANOTHER 5.5 lbs this past week & he started the same day I did.. that's a total of 40 lbs since 5/24. Wish I could lose like that, LOL.

Anyway, thank you to all of you who gave your insight & your support. I know I need the complex carbs to lose the weight, so I'm just going to play around with the grains & fruits & see which give me the least desire to want more. Thanks again.
