Could somebody please 'splain this?

I am fluctuating between 168 and 170 (through complete fault of my own) -- I am a size 12.

When I was in college, I was 150 ish most of the time and I was a 14. Some of the 14's from college ( I saved some semi-formals and skirts that I paid good money for) are too big on me, but I weigh more now. I've already confessed to being an old clothes wearer, so don't ask me why I still have things from college. ;-P

What is going on here? Any ideas?

I bought an adorable new jean skirt (knee length) and top. both size 12, so I did get out and do some shopping.

Could be that you have more muscle now, and muscle weighs more than fat.

Cammy's right--it's likely muscle weight. Hooray for the size 12s! :o)

Have you ever had your body fat measured? You are probably at a lower body fat percentage now than you were then.

Muscle weights more than fat - my trainer I worked with in CA was 5'5", weighed 150lbs and wore a size 0. She was BUFF! I weighed about 125 in high school and wore a size 7/8. When I got to 125 this last time I was wearing either a 4 or a 6.

Also - not to burst bubbles, because I think MOST of it is the first reason (muscle vs. fat) Clothing sizes have changed over the years. What is a size 4 today was probably a 6 ten years ago. They keep changing the numbers because they think women prefer to see a smaller number (which we do LOL!)

Again - not to down anything!! In the end - who cares what the number says! Fact is, those skirts are loose! And loose is loose - it means you are smaller now!

I think changing styles can be the culprit. When styles change over the years, so does the sizing. For example, the same size jeans will fit differently if they are high waisted or lower cut. The same applies to skirts...I recently put one on from a few years ago when I was heavier. Because of where the waistband fell, the skirt is actually too small for me now. Kinda weird.

I think you all must be right.

My body composition is just so different from before having children. I get skinny in different places. My DIET is so much healthier, its easier to lose weight, that's for sure. I was a horrible eater in college, but I thought I was more muscular then, but maybe I was wrong. I mean, my last two kids have required a LOT of holding and carrying around, I guess that builds muscle. Plus I exercise 3x a week -- always striving for 5.

But clothes are definitely "vanity sized", not all lines but some.

Plus, I felt smaller before I had kids, and now I just feel enormous. I think that is perspective -- before kids, I spent a lot of time with my Mom and sister who are taller and larger than I am. Now I'm with MIL who is barely 5 feet and barely 100 pounds -- I feel behemoth next to her.

Its just a combination of everything, I guess. I want to say good bye to the 170's for GOOD!!!

You WILL do it!!

I understand where you're comming from. 10 years ago, I weighed 125 and wore a size 4. Now, I'm at 150 and wear a 10 (on a good day) but 12s are comfy too. I'm sure if I can lose 20 more pounds, I'll still be an 8 or so, because of how I'm shaped now that I have kids. The cuts are different, and my body is different. Either way, to echo MichaelAnn, if you see progress, keep going! I saw your photo of your Old Navy skirt and I thought you looked GORGEOUS. Don't sweat it! Keep it up!! You're doing great.

Thanks...I needed a little boost! I don't know why I just feel so huge lately. I'm putting on stuff and I'm trying to tell myself I'm not as big as I used to be (I've lost forty pounds total...) but I just *feel* enormous.

Oh well. Thanks, though, I certainly want to keep going forward, not back. I just keep hitting these "set points". Or "lazy points" or something!!

Teresa,

I know exactly how you feel. I'm at one of those points where sometimes I look in the mirror and think, "Hey, girl, you look pretty good!" and other times I think I look like a manatee. It's hard to see the changes in yourself when it's YOUR body and you live with it every minute of every day. But if you look at some pictures of yourself at your starting weight you'll see just how far you've come. From the last pictures you've posted, I think you look FABULOUS!!

Thanks, Deb. I'm an encouragement sponge these last couple days!

What you described is exactly how I feel! I think I really need to get some toning started. I had three c-sections in four years, so there's not too much hope for the tum-tum. I'll just keep washing and wearing that orange skirt....its my skinny skirt.

WOW!! Forty pounds!!! When you start to feel fat think about that number!! You lost a 6 year old! I know that would make me feel better! :) How long ago did you start?
