If you have not tried these, do!
I am never going back to slow cook oats, these are so much tastier and keep me full for hours and hours. And I cook them overnight in the crock pot and then throw in what you need for however you want it flavored and bkfst is ready!!!!
I am not a morning person, so the fewer decisions facing me in the kitchen at 6:30, the better!!

Is there an area on this site explaining on how to cook them (in different ways)? I just bought some today for the first time and love the crock pot idea for an "instant breakfast" in the morning.
Any suggestions on how to do this?
Thanks!
Sharon
Sharon, here's what I have saved off of this board in the past. I haven't personally tried the crockpot method, but some here cook theirs that way all the time.
Hope this helps!!!

How to cook steel-cut oatmeal
I make about 4 servings at a time (4 cups water, 1 cup oats) I soak them overnight or they take WAY too long to cook in the morning. I like mine REALLY cooked through (no "bite" left) so to cook them from scratch takes more than 1.5 hr for me. I boil the water the night before, add the oats, turn off the heat, cover and let sit over night. In the morning I bring it back to a boil and cook about 20-25 min more (though the directions on mine say 10-12min, but they still taste raw to me at that point) I portion it out into 4 tupperwear containers and then just reheat in the microwave for a couple minutes each morning. I add some Smart Balance, couple packs of Splenda and cinnamon to mine. But you can dress it up any way that you do regular oatmeal (peanut butter, sf jam, cut up fruit, milk, etc.)
Here's the crockpot method:
Use 1 cup oats, 4 1/2 cups of water & 1/2 teaspoon salt. As an option, you can add some dried fruit like dried apple or diced up dried apricots. Cook on low for about 8 hours. These methods make 4 servings. And they stay very moist in the fridge and reheat perfectly in the microwave.

If you go with the crockpot option, be sure to spray your crockpot thoroughly with Pam.
Thanks so much, Rebekah!!!
I've saved them to my endless list of SBD articles and information. I appreciate the information!!

Thanks for the 'heads-up' Joy!! I was actually thinking of using one of those handy-dandy crockpot liner bags that I've fallen in love with!! NO cleanup whatsoever!!

I made a note on my crockpot recipe. I WILL get around to trying this sometime!!! But I agree with Cathy on liking to get a dairy serving with it.
I've fixed these twice now with just the directions on the package and then one time adding frozen blueberries and the other time, peanut butter & banana. The second time, I could not finish the entire (1/4 cup uncooked) serving. It was just too much. And it stuck with me a very long time. I'm thinking that I will try the crockpot method sometime soon tho, because DH really needs to mix up his breakfasts. He eats the same cereal every morning.

Will do, Rebekah!!
With the weather being in the mid to high 80s it's far too warm for oatmeal at this point but we're supposed to get highs in the 70s later this week...... brrrrrrrr!!
