Sizzle? Maybe. Set off the smoke alarm? No. Did you put oil on it? That would cause it to sizzle. Or, maybe it's up too high in the oven. I would put it on a rack in the lower third.
WHen I roast my chicken (ROFLMAO) I put it on one of those racks that has the pan underneath so the juices run down into the bottom pan and yes, sometimes it does sizzle.
I am a bit late coming in on this post - but no, I've never SMOKED a chicken in that way (OMG I'm drying) that I needed to shut off the smoke alarms.

Ah, yes, see no smoke for me b/c I roast at 350 20 minutes per pound - lower temp.
