DYK I started off at 4.5.
DYK I think it's easier to run for a few minutes, and then walk for a few minutes. As you build up your stamina, you'll be able to run for longer and walk less and less.
DYK I should add that I run pretty slowly.
DYK even now I tend to stay between 4.5 and 5.5, but I'll add in sprints at 6.5.

dyk Joy have you tried the Couch to 5K program?
dyk you would be very surprised at the distance you can run if you start out the right way
dyk I warm up at 3.5 to 4.2 and run at 5 and above on the treadmill
DYK I keep saying I want to do the C25K, but then I get frustrated when I try running for just a little while.
DYK maybe I need to revisit that idea.
