MAKE a "map" of where you are going. Draw your own that has the major stops and cities, and a nice happy drawing for your final destination. Throw in a few simple drawings of landmarks you'll see along the way, such as a big bridge you'll or a mountain tunnel. A home made map is easy for kids to follow and gives them a clearer picture of how much further there is to go. If your kids are old enough and it's a trip that you take frequently, have the kids make their own map!
dyk I don't have time to do it for this trip - which will be in the dark on the way there... but I will use it in the future!!!
Travel Tickets Use some colored construction paper to cut out some "tickets" for your trip. Give your child a pre-counted baggie full of tickets. Every half hour (or every 30 miles) they can turn in one ticket to you. When their tickets are gone, the trip has ended! This really helps young children get an idea of how much time is left on the journey.
dyk Tia, i hope things work out for you to gett a car to pick up your Irish setter
dyk Karen, love the new picture; and I hope you can still do your planned party for the girls after all the effort you've already expended on it
dyk Jamie, how's John doing now that he's home, and what happened with your presentation this morning
dyk Joy & Jennie even when I didn't work outside the house I wasn't nearly as good at prepping for long car trips -- you're my role models for that task now
dyk Sheila, I chuckled about giving Christopher the receipt, but I agree that it would be mean; he's likely feeling horrible enough about the whole ordeal (which is what it was for him, even if he didn't let on that it was)
dyk sorry for the lame recap, and sorry if I missed anyone

dyk I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS IDEA:

DYK that's also a cute idea!
DYK I have printed geocaches all the way through Pennsylvania and Virginia, down I-81, hoping we can do some along the way when we need to stop.
dyk and this one - I am doing this one TONIGHT:

dyk it sounds like a fun car ride for the kids?
dyk what a good mom?
DYK I'm way behind (and probably too late on this one), but have you thought about RedBox?
DYK you can rent from ANY RedBox and return to ANY RedBox?
DYK so you could even stop for a potty break at McD's and get a new movie?
DYK and drop it off at a RedBox in NC?
