DYK- In our area, alot of the larger tomato plant varieties had a fungus

DYK- The same fungus that caused the Irish potato blight so many years ago

DYK- Apparently a grower in the south somewhere, his young plants contracted this fungus and when the plants were shipped to nursery's tp be sold to the public, the fungus spread.

DYK - So it could be the fungus and not the excessive rain that caused your plants to rot on the vine.
