Ty's Sears Commercial

Has anyone seen Ty Pennington's Sears commercials in which he asks several guests at a party what they would like for Christmas. The answer from a teenage girl was, "Anything that makes my mom nervous." If I had to describe almost 14 y.o. dd in a nutshell, that would probably do it. She likes everything I dislike. I say tomato, she says tomahtoe. I say potato...You get the idea. It does help to keep a sense of humour about these things.

Her latest argument as to getting her belly button pierced (which to hear her tell every girl in 8th grade already has done) before she's 16 (when I have already agreed to let her!) is that if I make her wait too long, when she's 18 and can do what she wants she will go all out. She'll get all the piercings, and tattoos (which I despise). If I really cared, I wouldn't "hold her back" so she'll be obliged to go "crazy" when she's 18. LOL. You gotta laugh to keep from crying (my mother used to say this)....

I went through this exact thing w/my dd when she was 13. "Everyone else has their bb pierced, if you don't let me do it now everyone will have it and it won't be cool". Then came the nose pierce request. We fought and fought for over a year, until I realized we pick and choose our battles with our children and this one was not worth the battle. I did make her sign a contract stating she will not ask or expect to get anything else pierced or any tattoos until she is 18 and is on her own. The contract was drafted up by me, and I had her look at the wording so we both agreed on the content. That seems to work well in some situations. Chances are by the time she is 18, the piercing fad will be over because everyone will have them and it won't be unique anymore (I am hoping that the tongue piercing will REALLY fade away!)

I saw that commercial!

You know, it's surprising how many 8th graders DO have their belly button pierced. But 16 is very, very reasonable.

Hey, at least she hasn't threatened to do it herself yet. *grin*

I'm not much of a tv person, so I haven't seen that commercial, but I DO know who Ty Pennington is!

I'm not particularly crazy about all the body piercing that's currently the rage either, but I don't mind a belly button ring so much if it's on a cute, flat little belly and isn't too big or obvious. It's the ones on the flabby, hanging over the jeans bellies that tend to gross me out. It would be like ME trying to pull that off!

My DD hasn't expressed any interest at all in piercing any body part other than her ears. I think it's because she found that piercing experience to be rather painful. She has dozens of pairs of really cute earrings but she rarely changes out of a pair of CZ posts except for special occassions. I will be VERY suprised if she ever wants to pierce anything else, but who knows? I actually don't know of any teens her age who have anything other that pierced ears, either.

My question is this: what happens when the piercings either go out of style or the person gets tired of them? On a belly, I guess you could just remove the jewelry and no one would be the wiser. But what about the piercing that's in a nose, or upper lip, or eyebrow? Those holes just won't go away naturally.

Sometime in the past year, we were having breakfast (at a Denny's I think) and I noticed a young man about 25 with an enormous earring in his ear. I noticed it because it was so huge it had totally distorted the shape of his earlobe. Of course, I could not stop staring at him or his ear and was trying to figure out what the earring actually WAS. It look like some sort of abstract, multi-colored disc until I realized I was looking RIGHT THROUGH HIS EAR!

Now, I have to wonder ... in about 10 years, when he's tired of his punk (or whatever it's called now) look, what is he going to do about that ear?

Some companies have a policy against piercings (except ears) and tattoos. They must be covered or the jewelry removed while at work. One lady claimed that she belonged to the Church of Body Modification and that this policy was infringing on her freedom of religion - I think she actually won the lawsuit. I made my Basic Writing write me a couple of paragraphs on their thoughts on this once. It was very interesting.
