Question about breasts...open with care

My 16dd recently told me that she has blood around her nipples - the skin looks like it is cracking and there is a clear/bloody oozing thing going on. I washed all her bras in hot water and bought her a new cotton lined bra, bought her a special cleanser and salve to put on herself - thinking maybe it was a hygiene issue. But I made an appt with her gyno anyway.
We saw her gyno this morning and she said something about papilloma but felt no lumps....and is sending her to a breast surgeon for further evaluation. Of course, I went onto MayClinic.com and looked up anything having to do with nipple discharge or pain and the item that fits the description best is something called Paget's Disease. So, now I'm shaking in my boots.
Any thoughts...at all?

I have no idea or thoughts at all except to say this -- those online medical libraries can be downright frightening! I find that they are the most useful once you have gotten a diagnosis of the condition for more info and tips. However when you try to hunt through them based on symptoms you can start to uncover all those dark, scary nightmare diseases.
You did a good thing getting her an appointment for a full professional evaluation. It may be nothing or it may be something but let the doctors do their job and don't drive yourself nuts before you have to.
I totally agree with diamondslb..........don't let the online stuff freak you out. Until you receive a diagnosis from your doctor, don't panic.
My thoughts are with you and your DD---please let us know what the outcome is......

{{Hugs}} I'd be terrified too. I have heard of both papilloma (I think it's some sort of virus) and also Pagets', but unfortunately don't know any at all about them.
When will your DD see the surgeon? Please keep us posted!
I'm not freaking out, just worried. And the part that really bugs me is that when I asked the DR if she would need an ultrasound or mammogram, she said that because of dd's age she wouldn't recommend it, but if dd were in her 20's she'd say yes. ??
I have a friend who is a coach of Freshmen college boys and he lost one of them to testicular cancer. The boy had complained of pain in his groin for over a year. The DR's screened him for everything but never testicular cancer because as they told the kid and his parents, "Men his age don't get testicular cancer". He was only 20 years old and died this past Spring.
Isn't it a little ignorant in today's age of technology to forego an exam or testing to rule cancer out due to age only?? When we see the surgeon I am going to ask this question. It just seems so simple to just do an ultrasound to be sure. My dd has large dense breasts, the DR even commented on it, so just because she didn't feel a lump just under the nipple doesn't mean there isn't one there. I mean, just to be sure, right?
Thanks for your support and reassurances.
Sorry you and your DD are going through this!! Let us know what the doc says!

Yes, definitely request an ultrasound or mammogram. I once knew a woman whos DD was diagnosed with breast cancer in her early 20's; she described her DD's breasts much like you did your DD's.
The discharge itself can also be tested for abnormal hormone levels, etc. (I had that experience 6-8 years ago.)
You know, recently my dd has been tested for sleep apnea - had to go do an overnight at the Sleep Center (ugh). Everything was fine. Then she had to see another DR because her joints were swelling up and becoming stiff for seemingly no reason. Although her blood tests came back okay, they suspect she may have reumatoid arthritis of some kind. Roght now her joints are okay.
When she about 18 months old, I finally took her to see an endriconologist because her left breast was still puffy since her birth (at the time they said it would eventually go away - it didn't). The Dr at that time told me that he wouldn't be surprised if dd didn't one day develop arthritis and/or kidney issues. He said that it would be prudent if anything odd happened along the way to have her hormones checked. Well, when they did the recent blood work all her hormone levels came back okay, she was slightly anemic, but otherwise fine.
I am baffled. Thanks again!
