Why pets for Christmas?

OK, this may be a bit of a vent...DH has a 14 year old son (my DSS) and he's wanted a puppy for Christmas/birthday/etc. since he's lived with us (off and on for about 5 years). We keep telling him he's not responsible enough and DH and I don't have time to take care of one, so he can't have one. We even compromised and got him a horse (we own a horse farm, so it's not a big deal at all to check one extra horse when I have to check 35 others every morning anyway). Everyone knows how we feel about the pet thing and nobody would DARE get him a dog, but...one of his friends gave him a lizard for Christmas. OK, a lizard's not a high maintenance pet (and personally, I think he's kinda cute). DSS just got the lizard last night (the kids at the barn exchanged gifts then), and he set him up in the cage with the heat lamp. Now, all the maintenance he requires is to have his cage sprayed with water daily and to drop a cricket in the cage for him to eat. DSS is home all day, until about 4:30 when he left to spend the night with a friend (which was planned in advance, not spur of the moment). As he's walking out the door, he asked me if I'd spray the cage and feed the cricket. It hasn't even been one day! If I didn't like the little critter so much, I'd let my cats eat him, but I'm too much of a softie to let that happen! So, I guess I have another pet!
Hope everyone's holidays are happy! Thanks for listening!
Jane
