Hello:
Karezz shared how to block MySpace.com on your computer. I felt it was something many of you would like to know, so here goes...
First, you have to be set up as administrator and your kids as regular
account users without administrator rights.
In your C: drive
Go to the Folder C:windows\system32\drivers\etc\
Open the file named "Hosts" with Notepad. This file does not have an
extention. Make sure it stays that way. At the bottom, it should say
something similar to: 127.0.0.1 localhost.
At the next line, add the following:
127.0.0.1 www.myspace.com <http://www.myspace.com>
Add as many lines as you wish, all looking like: 127.0.0.1 (type the web
address here)Make sure you leave spaces between the numbers and the web
address.
There are other URL's that access myspace. Make sure you include them all.
Click on File, then Save and reopen your browser.
Here are SOME of the URls that can access myspace. There may be others out
there.
127.0.0.1 home.myspace.com
127.0.0.1 chat.myspace.com
127.0.0.1 forum.myspace.com
127.0.0.1 groups.myspace.com
127.0.0.1 www.myspace.com <http://www.myspace.com>
127.0.0.1 profile.myspace.com
I don't know about you, but homework will now get done in my house!!! I hope you find it helpful too!!

Hi Carla,
Thanks for posting this separately - I think others would like to know about it.
One problem though. Blocking MySpace this way worked for a few days and then stopped working. I'll try to get to the bottom of this and post and update.
Hi Karen:
Oh bummer, it's still working for me but as you said it will probably stop working soon. Let me know what you find out, thanks!!
Happy New Year!
Carla
Editing the hosts file in this manner never just stops working.
Something has changed.
Either the file name inadvertantly got an extention, or the file was modified accidentially or on purpose by one of those litte imp evil geniuses.. :-)
Can you post the contents of the file?
Seriously, it disappeared. There is no way my evil genius could have figured this out. I had about 20 myspace urls at the bottom and it DID work for about a week. Here is what the host file looks like now.

# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.

Whoa!
All your stuff is gone! <--- technical term
Why not give it another try.
This is a simple text file. There is nothing in windows that modifies it like would a system or preference file.
If it happens again there is some serious weirdness going on.
Once, when I meant to "copy" I actually "cut". Just a thought..:-)
D
Yep! I am sure I did it right. The only thing I am not totally sure of is if I saved it correctly. After entering all the myspace urls, in notepad, I clicked on 'file' and 'save'. Was that right? Should I click 'save as' and name a new file or something?
TIA (again!!!)
I'd be curious if the modified file went somewhere else. You could do a search of the hard drive in "my computer". Hit the "search" button, select "all files and folders", "All or part of the filename" is hosts. And see what comes up.
Karen:
That must have been it, mine is still blocking it. My evil genius hasn't figured it out yet, I'm sure she's having her 'peeps' working on it....hehe.
Happy New Year to you all!
