Let me get into it a little bit....

I don't want to keep focusing on the period thing but I gotta say that everything that everyone said is true-that she is right on track and so on. But, I have to clarify a little bit more....first, she has supplies on hand, she has had them for the past 2 yrs, because I assumed it was any day now. She also has the mood swings, no more or less than any other teen-she is literally downright miserable one minute and laughing the next. We've become used to it, seeing that she started on these mood swings in 5th grade. Also, she sleeps alot when she gets the chance. The boobs thing? She has had little bumps for quite awhile now, what I meant about them coming out of nowhere is that they kinda just went thru this "growth spurt" and now she actually wears an A cup. She has been shaving since 5th grade. I know that it seems like Im being overly concerned but it just seems that she has had all the signs for along time. I don't know why it even concerns me- it doesn't seem to bother her. Anyway, thanks!! Stephanie

i really think you don' thave to worry - your dd's periods will start when her body is ready. i don't think it matters if omeone else in the house in menstruating or not. even women who grow up without a mother still menstruate....

What is your DD's weight?
The age a girl starts her periods also depends on the percent body fat she has.
The magic weight is 100 lbs for an girl of average height. If your little girl is a slight
little thing, it might take longer.

The average age now is between 12 & 13. Puberty is a long drawn-out process. The external "characteristics" start first. You would have notice that her feet would have "sprouted".
When her feet stop growing, that is a good sign that puberty is well on its way.

Don't worry. It will happen, when it happens. If you are very concerned, at her next check-up, ask the doctor to do a blood test.

I agree with the weight thing...my dd turned 15 in July - she started her period in August. Up until that point I think she weighed about 110# - she is now around 115#. She has always been involved in some sort of sport and has danced most of her life. She is very healthy looking, but really didn't have a growth spurt until between 9th and 10th grade.

Stephanie - jumping in late on this, but FWIW my DD had all the signs for two years also. It was so weird, we went through two years of "any day now" - boobs, hair, etc, all the changes, except that one. The doc kept saying there's no timeline. And sure enough one day it came.

My dd started late too. She got her first period a month before starting ninth grade. In contrast she has friends who started in sixth grade!!! Incidentally unlike alot of the common wisdom seen out there she really started to sprout and had a growth spurt AFTER starting her period.

I remember being worried about it showing up so late too. But then nature took its course. The types of issues that cause someone to NOT menstruate at all are pretty rare and serious. So I wouldn't worry about it too much.
