OK, this is about mine, not DD's. My period started Tuesday night/Wed morning. Yesterday I had terrible back pain (like early labor more than cramps/period). This morning, during my commute to work, I bled through a super tampon, my underwear, and my pants. UGH This hasn't happened to me since I was a teenager.

Good thing I work in an office of 90% women. I had to call the office from the ladies room down the hall to tell them what happened. My boss ran home to bring me a pair of her pants until mine dry out.

What a way to start the day!! Not that I'm wising to get older, but at 46yo menopause, and no more periods, is looking not so bad.

sue - i don't mean to scare you or anything - but what you are describing is NOT normal. it could be stress-induced, it could be fiberous things or cysts but you really should speak to your gyn. also - if you are losing alot of blood you should take some extra vitamins at least until the doctor does blood test.

Yeah, entering menopause can be a real drag. Some women experience really light periods in perimenopause and others describe what you're experiencing. About 10 years ago, at the age of 33 I experienced about 5-6 months of extremely heavy periods (I had to use super everything!) and my DR put me on the pill to help lesson the flow and also make them shorter in duration. He said that although I was still young, the symptoms were very much a part of perimenopause. I didn't start really getting the true symptoms until I was 37 (My family's history is that my mother and sisters all started at 38). I was only on the pill for about 6 months and it did the trick.

Now at 43, my periods are lighter and only last about 4-5 days total. I haven't taken the pill in ages and my periods are fairly regular. The perimenopause symptoms I experience most are night sweats, occasionally hot flashes and headaches,,,,not to mention hard to get rid of weight gain and some bloating.

I'd say that your symptoms definitely warrant a visit to your gyno - better to be checked out and deemed "normal" than guess what's going on. Best of luck!

Here is a link with perimenopause/menopause information - very interesting, funny reading. It is part of the iVillage boards.

Hi Sue, your story reminded me of a similar situation where I wasn't as fortunate as you. I was returning from a 3 day conference by train when I realized that I had soaked through a super tampon and pad onto the train seat. I was able to grab my jacket and wrap it around me for the trip to the bathroom but I have always wondered what the steward thought when he cleaned up after I left the train.

I suggest that you need to have this checked out by your doctor. It was very normal for me to flood through everything in a very short time but I had a girlfriend who had medical problems which were causing this to happen to her.

Good luck, I've been going through this since I was 45 and I'm almost 50. I can't wait for the no period days!! Dee

i wanted to add/explain: the reason that i am such an alarmist about this particular symptom, is because i had ovarian cancer 6years ago. i had a full hysterectomy and was immediately plunged into menopause (skipped the 'peri' stage). anyway, i had a few months of heavy bleeding and alot of pain and they checked and saw that i had a cyst and a myoma (both are NOT cancerous) but there were OTHER symptoms that tthey were unhappy about and luckily for me that my doctor sent me to additional tests where they found that i had cancer.

I was not really aware that heavy bleeding is a symptom of peri menopause, as i said - i skipped that. but i do want to stress that its important to see a doctor whenever things are abnormal...
