Surgeon for a day...

DS18 job shadowed with an orthopedic surgeon yesterday and had a wonderful day. This is the same surgeon who worked on him last summer and released the entrapped nerve in his foot. The surgeon is tops in his field, one of the best in the country, and is a partner at a huge sports medicine practice in Indianapolis. DS got to "scrub in" for 3 surgeries- removal of a plate/pins in someone's foot, repair of ligaments and setting of a broken ankle, and reconstruction of a very badly broken wrist with tendon and ligament damage. The wrist surgery was with another partner from the same clinic who met DS that morning and invited him into his surgery.

DS loved every minute of it: the morning surgeries, seeing patients during afternoon office hours, meeting with the physical therapists in the rehab area. He is now definite about wanting to go to med school and become either an orthopedic surgeon or anesthesiologist. He's invited up to shadow again with the same doctor, plus three others (a surgeon, an anethesiologist and a primary care physician) want him to come spend a day as well. He was just walking on air recounting every detail of his day when he got home last night and is going to see his guidance counselor this morning to see how many more job shadowing days the school will count as excused absences.

It's really exciting to see him choosing such a wonderful career. He's worked so hard in school, I just know he will be successful if he remains focused. ::proud mommy moment:: **sniff, sniff** :)

GO DS!!! We have a 23yo DS applying to 13 different universities for a clinical psychology doctorate fellowship and a 16yo DD whose aspirations are the daily high school drama. She will find her calling soon. They can achieve what they put their heart into. Job shadowing is a great opportunity, the MDs who gave him the opportunity should be commended as well.
