Plans for New Year's Eve?
11
Thu, 12-28-2006 - 12:01pm

Our tradition for years when the kids were younger was to get lots of good food, stay home and play board games and ring in the New Year. Now that we have a 17 yo and 15 yo, of course, they would rather hang with friends. I believe there is even a local "show" in town of the local rock bands. But the whole New Year's Eve thing makes the mom of a newly licensed teenage boy driver very, very nervous. In addition, the law says he is supposed to be off the roads by 11pm.

What do others do on NYE?

DS14 isn't that 'social' yet (he finds XBox Live more to his liking than a bunch of kids over) and has been fighting a cold since Thanksgiving, so we'll be doing your board games and movies and finger food evening! He's trying to get better to be able to go skiing with scouts the 5th; right now he's way to stuffed up to consider it. I've told him he can have someone over/overnight if he wants, but at least for now, that's not of interest. So I went and got 3 little steaks, some shrimp, some Fridays appetizers, and one of those deadly frozen cheesecake samplers....and we got a load of movies for Christmas...

I'm finding that the trend now, at least in our neck of the woods, is to stay home for NYE and just watch movies and snack on finger foods. I'm getting too old now to go out and party anyway - even staying UP until midnight is a challenge - lol!

My DH hates NYE, and his tradition is to go to bed at his regular time (11ish). DS7 would stay up if he could, but he usually crashes at 10.

DD15 loves staying up until midnight, and part of her tradition is keeping me awake that long lol. This year I said she could have a few girls over for a sleepover - so far only one is coming for sure. The others have "family obligations". My DD is, lol, furious! "Who wants to spend New Years with their family!?" LOLOL

So, it may just be me, my DD, and one or two girls. I'll try to get some fun foods and sparkling cider to make it festive.

I would be nervous too but I guess we all have to let go and trust a little. Sigh! What are you going to do about the 11:00pm cerfew?

As for our New Years plans. For the third time now we will go to my sisters house where the men cook the meal and clean the kitchen. Well, actually my brother in law, the greatest cook in the world, cooks and the other men are sous chefs.(did I spell that right?) I love it. We start a gourmet dinner at around 8:00pm and don't finish until very close to midnight. I know its a lot of work for the men but they really enjoy it. They cook, talk and drink a little all night. We even get a menu sent out the day before(email)so that we know what we are in for. It is usually very expensive so we all share the cost. It is fast becoming a family tradition that I am willing to keep. Oh yeah, the kids get homemade pizza and movies around 7:00pm, all have a taste of champagne at midnight and we all stay overnight or have a designated driver.

It really is. I would recommend it to anyone. We talk about it for a long time afterwards.

A man doing any cooking at all is a dream, in my life. DH seems to think Mr. Happy will fall off if he spends more than 32 seconds in the kitchen.
