boys and shaving...silly little question

I feel a bit ridiculous asking for advice on this *blush* Still on a learning curve with my new son... having only raised daughters from birth I occasionally run into my own ineptitude with a 15 year old. He's going to have to start shaving soon - and he hasn't mentioned it. He's got lousy personal hygiene in general, so he probably WON'T really notice until I get him some shaving supplies. What are teen boys using? What kind of razor do I get him, and will he need any instruction on technique? I DID make the trip to the drugstore with my daughter for a "Venus" lady shave, some nice creamy shaving foam, and the basic advice on how to shave legs and armpits, but I'm guessing I'll have to modify this a bit for my son, LOL

None of mine have any interest in electric and use the multi blade hand shavers. Not disposable but with the replacement blades(the very expensive replacement blades) They seem to think the more blades the better.....

I didnt show them how and I KNOW DH didnt. I do remember DS3 practicing on his arm before he did his face :)

I let them pick out the gel and cant recall the names offhand but, if you buy, you can probably tell the 'young' brands by the marketing

My boys like anything 'Axe' but I dont think they make a shaving gel(you can try the shower gel to inspire hygiene though)

My son had acne so I bought him an electric razor first. He really liked it, but after the first two quit working within the first year, he went to disposable razors and said he liked them just fine.

For Christmas I bought him a razor I saw on tv. I wish I could remember the name of it, lol. It looks like one of those razors that Windrush talked about, with the disposable blades, but it has batteries in it, too. I keep forgetting to ask him if he's used it yet and what he thinks about it, but I will.

My son has an electric razor. He doesn't use any "shaving creme" but, well, he is at the peach fuzz stage. He will work it out. It is not that hard to do.

Not to worry.
I would think technique would be about the same as girls. (Don't move the blade sideways, ouch!)
Multi-bladed cartridge razors all seem to be the same, just packaged differently for women. Fortunately, our teens have the advantage of starting out with fine hair. This must be by intelligent design, as they can practice and become proficient before it turns coarse and harder to manage. lol
I do think disposable razors are not nearly as good as replaceable cartridges, but at this stage of development, it really doesn't matter what shave cream or razor he uses.

I AM curious though... is presenting boys with these supplies still treated as a big deal? A rite of passage? or has this changed?

LOL - did that, and it worked! It used to be a struggle to get him to shower - he insisted that all soaps and gels dried out his skin and made him itchy. STRANGELY he claims the "Axe" doesn't bother him - so he uses it...lavishly. *gag* - but at least he's clean! (Seriously, it seems so stupid now - but the issue of showering was a HUGE big deal the first several months we had him...I even asked for advice here...and now he just gets up and showers every morning like a normal kid. amazing. and a good reminder that most parenting issues are "no big deal" in the grand scheme of things. )

thanks for the advice, all! I didn't know if electric shavers were good or not...my hubby just uses good quality multi-blades. Maybe I'll have to actually ASK my son, LOL. I'm pretty sure that he'll just tell me he doesn't plan to shave at all. Daddioe - I'm kind of hoping this is a "no big deal" rather than a "rite of passage". In my opinion that makes everything too weird. When I was 13 and started my "monthlies", my mom made this HUGE production out of it - she even phoned half our relatives to announce that "S. is a woman now". OMG - I still cringe with embarassment to recall that! But what one definitive moment would there be for a boy? LOL

A bit late here - both boys started out with an electric razor.

What's with these guys and their 'Axe' hangups? My son is always asking me to buy Axe deodorant. They must have some good advertising out there. I showed DS17 that the active ingredients in $4 Axe are the same as in my $2 unscented Secret, but he refuses to use my brand. Perhaps Axe smells a little less deodoranty than most brands, but I still think it stinks. I bought him some Versace cologne for Xmas so that he'll use that along with an unscented deodorant, and forget the stinky Axe! (Also got DH some Lacoste red--love both those!)

DS17 uses electric for a quick shave, and a sensor type for a clean shave.

My guys are really into the Axe products as well as the Old Spice High Endurance body washes... my bathroom always smells "guy" - not so bad since I've had one or the other gone most of the time for the past 3 or 4 years, but still very "guy." As for razors, they all swear by Gillette Fusion and some shave cream in a black and orange can or black and green can - mostly black. I don't buy it, and only move it around the bathroom counter when I clean - and today all the guys are gone for the weekend, so I can't even go check to see what they use.

My guys hate electric razors, and swear the disposable ones cause more nicks - or maybe they have expensive tastes?

I hear ya. My son won't use anything but Axe deodorant. I didn't realize how popular it was until this thread!
